Proud Papa = Ten Ways to Share Your Happy News

Linda Ann Nickerson
Hey, Dad! Want to tell the world about your brand-new baby? Here are 10 simple ways to spread the word.

Cigar, anyone?

Cigars are the age-old means for a father to announce his child's birth. However, they can be quite costly, and fewer people appreciate this than in former days. However, many candy stores do offer bubble-gum cigars in pink and blue. Why not?

Cookie bouquets

Spread the word sweetly with a cookie bouquet! Cookies are placed on long stem-like sticks and arranged with small placards, bows, and other decor.

Online photos

Several online photo album websites will allow you to upload those new baby pictures and wing them off immediately to an unlimited number of eager recipients. (If you wish, you can even to this with the ultrasound photos.)

Pastries

Donuts, bagels or pastries may be ordered to spell out your message of good news. Even popcorn buckets are available for this purpose. Your coworkers will welcome a gustatory announcement wholeheartedly.

Personalized candy bars

Custom-covered candy bars are available from most confectioners. Of course, you can make your own. Why not print out your own labels for Hershey bars (or any candy bar) and pass those out to colleagues and friends?

Poetry

If you are feeling particularly creative on the happy occasion, why not craft a poem to announce the wonderful event? Print out postcards, and send them to friends and family. I did this for our children, and their individual poems have become framed heirlooms in their bedrooms. (You can even hire a professional wordsmith to create a rhyme for your happy occasion!)

Theme announcements

You can purchase or produce your own printed birth announcements, using a wide variety of themes, from Hollywood Walk of Fame stars to Rookie-of-the-Year sports cards.

Water bottles

Create your own labels, and pass out water bottles at work with all the details! Include a digitized photo, along with the baby's name, height, weight, time of birth, and more.

Web-sites and blogs

Using today's simple web-site construction software, you might build a photo website for the newborn. (Privacy settings will allow you to select those who have access to the site.) Enthusiastic new parents often develop online announcements on social interaction websites. Others begin a blog with updates on the new arrival!

Yard signs

Yard signs have become quite popular. Storks, teddy bears, ducklings and other themes can be found. Check the Yellow Pages or online for rentals. (If you are handy, why not construct your own sign? Add pink or blue balloons to grab neighbors' attention?)

This is a time for joy and celebration. Use your imagination, and have fun sharing the news!
