Therapy - As stated, battling depression with therapy is noted often, but it still bears repeating. Therapists can help you with every aspect of your life, whether it be job problems, trouble with stress, or family squabbles. There is a reason this career is so successful; people really do need help with their lives.
Journaling - I state journaling because it has helped me through some of my darkest hours. When the words fail you, when therapy has grown old, take out a notebook and write down all the things that trouble you. This can lead to your own form of artistic expression. By writing your troubles down, you see them in a new light. It might not be easy to write down what ales you, but it can help in many ways. Sometimes the problems won't seem as big on paper, or perhaps it could lead to thoughts on changing your actions.
Read - This applies mainly to self-help books. Sometimes getting new ideas on what troubles you can come from such a book. It will mend you inside in a way that other things like journaling and therapy cannot. Books are also a healthy escape from the real world. If you are focused on the problems with your characters, you might not focus on yours so much, or think they are so bad. I would recommend books of the self help kind first, as they can be more productive. But a good novel can help enjoy a summer day.
Medicine - Many people hate the term "medicine" or just taking pills to quell the self-doubts. The truth is, medicine can help just as much as anything else. I find that taking the right medicines has changed my life. It's not always popular, but it can help deal with depression. There are those against medicine, but if it works for you then it doesn't hurt anyone.
That's just a few proven ways I have found to battle depression. The subject is popular because it is so rampant, and people get paid a lot to analyze the reasons for this. See your doctors first, then explore other ways to battle this illness.
