Prozac Side Effects: What I Personally Experienced

Pirate Dreams and Banana Naps

Amy Cox
I wake up in the morning and stifle a yawn. Once again, the crazy dreams kept me up. I was riding a banana and then joined a group of pirates. Oh well, I'm used to it. It was just another night of Prozac dreams. I have become so accustomed to the side effects of Prozac that I barely even notice them anymore. When I make a house out of a big orange in my sleep, all I can do is wake up and laugh. It's like being on legal LSD, but I only get the hallucinogenic affects while I'm sleeping. Okay, then, I guess since it's legal, and since I only hallucinate when I'm asleep, it's not really like LSD. But still, you get the point.

Prozac is a wonder drug, and it has some strong side effects. Most mood altering drugs have side effects, and honestly, Prozac is not as bad as most. Luckily, a lot of the side effects go away after the first two weeks to a month. The headaches, while extreme the first couple of weeks, slow down and almost disappear after a month. Initially, I would get these pains in the side of my head that felt like an ice cream headache. While not pleasant, they would go away rather quickly. After a month, they rarely happened at all. Now, if I get one, it is a surprise.

Sleeplessness is another side effect of Prozac. Night will come, and I almost dread it. I know that I will have a difficult time falling to sleep. I hit the bed, and immediately, I feel energetic. I toss and turn, flip my pillow around, and kick legs out of the blankets. After an hour or so, I finally drift off to sleep.

Sleep is when the best of the side effects begin. When I say the best, I mean the hardest to deal with. The dreams, while not scary, are incredibly annoying. I wake up multiple times a night from the dreams. Sleep brings out the worst of all of the Prozac side effects. The dreams are so vivid and crazy that it is hard to fall back to sleep after having one.

Even with the side effects, Prozac is a wonderful medication to take. The only long lasting side effects are difficulty sleeping and the dreams, and those can be helped with sleeping pills, if your doctor chooses. The benefits far outweigh the side effects, and I would recommend that people that are new to Prozac to stick with it for a couple of months so they can fairly weigh the pros and cons.
