Prune Juice at Work

JENNIFER LUING SCHAFER
My daughter was about six months old when she became constipated. We did everything that we as new parents the books told us to do. The doctor suggested giving her extra fruits at mealtime. We did, waited to see if they would do their job, nothing.

We felt so bad for our daughter. We hated to see her sick. We were told to sit her in a warm bathtub with Epsom salts. We did that with no avail. We were getting pretty frustrated by this time. My husband was telling my mother about the problem. She suggested prune juice. My husband asked her how much. My mother said about a bottle full. We were using the small bottles, so my mom thought four ounces would be sufficient to give to my daughter. My husband found an eight ounce bottle, filled it up with prune juice and gave it to my daughter.

My daughter was playing great in her high chair when we heard her pass a little bit of gas. We were happy to hear the sound. We thought maybe she would finally go and be a happy camper once again. One popping sound led to a squish sound making us to look to find that the prune juice definitely took effect. I was so thankful we had tile floor. My husband started the shower immediately. I asked him what he was doing; he said that he was going to give her a shower high chair and all.

Later that evening my parents stopped by for a visit; my mother asked if we had given my daughter the prune juice. We started to laugh; he told her how much he had given her. My mother could not believe it, then she broke into laughter with the rest of us.

When we are asked to give a bit an advice for new parents we always tell this story. It is a mistake that we will never forget and it will be a great story to tell our future son in law when the time comes.
