Pruning

A Very Worthwhile Activity!

Janet Hunt
I began today, very reluctantly, some much needed spring cleaning around my place. One of the first eye sores to catch my attention was my houseplant. I will be the very first to admit, I have no green thumb!

Even so, somehow this hearty little plant has survived my ownership a full five years now. It has been re-potted, plucked and pruned many times. It was with a little sadness that I noticed its browning leaves, drying soil and general lackluster appearance.

I began the task of bringing my plant once again back to wellness. As I began pulling up and discarding brown trimmed leaves and dried-up stems, I was struck by the reality of how this plant is much like us. How we, sometimes with tender loving care, need our brown leaves trimmed. How we need to be "re-potted" to a new environment, whether it be relocating or surrounding ourselves with new friends, or perhaps giving up bad habits.

We need hearty soil in which to sink our roots into. Sunshine and moisture are the sweet little often unnoticed things in our lives that nourish our roots and help us grow. We need to drink more of these in, every day!

Well, long story short, my little plant looks a lot better now. I will try to take better care of it. Shame on me for neglecting it in the first place! It does look a little puny with all the pruning, not quite so full. But what is left is healthy leaves, stem, and soil full of moisture and nutrients. With the proper care, my little plant will make a full recovery! Thanks to a little lesson in pruning, I can see some areas in my own life that need to undergo this same procedure.

Just wanted to share my little "pruning" experience with you! Now, back to that Spring cleaning...
