Sony Playstation 3 Slim Release Date

The PS3 Slim release date has been officially confirmed - after months of rumors and speculation floating around online, this hot and highly-anticipated new addition to the next-gen console lineup is finally set to hit store shelves on September 1st. Consumers everywhere are eager to get their first peek at the most talked about home entertainment hardware of the year, but is the new PS3 Slim really worth buying? Here's all the info you need to decide for yourself:

PS3 Slim Specs

The good:

-32% smaller, 36% lighter, and uses 34% less power than current PS3 (PSExtreme News).

-Runs quieter than classic PS3.

-Optional vertical stand (similar to PS2 slim).

-120GB Hard Drive (with possible 250GB model rumored for the future).

-Built-in Wi-Fi and Blu-ray disc player.

-Firmware 3.0 included.

-2 USB ports still included.

-Same rear ports as original PS3 - 1 HDMI, 1 AV, 1 Ethernet, and 1 Optical.

-New integrated features for BRAVIA TV owners - including "BRAVIA Sync," which lets users control their PS3 XMB (XrossMediaBar - the PS3's main graphic menu interface) right from their BRAVIA HDTV remote.

The bad:

-Cheaper 'analogue' buttons to replace PS3's original 'touch' buttons.

-'Other OS' features native to original PS3 removed - PS3 Slim users will no longer be able to install secondary Operation Systems like Linux (a popular feature which also allowed PS3 classic owners to use their game console like a PC).

-No features adding major innovations (like backwards compatibility for older games) to users' overall gaming/multimedia experiences from the original PS3.

PS3 Slim Price Drop Confirmed

As part of the new PS3 Slim release, Sony has also announced a price drop from earlier estimates - the new PS3 Slim will be available to consumers for only $299 in the US and €299 in Europe, making it nearly half the price of many earlier PS3 models. A very attractive and affordable deal, especially for first-time PS3 shoppers, and it's already available for pre-order on sites like Amazon and Newegg.

PS3 Slim - The Bottom Line

The Sony Playstation 3 Slim is a smaller, cheaper, and sleeker PS3 - don't expect any other groundbreaking new features, but for gamers looking to buy their first PS3, current PS3 owners just trying to free up some space on their shelves, or die-hard techies who just can't wait to get their hands on the latest and greatest new hardware, the PS3 Slim promises to be one of the hottest electronics buys of 2009.
