Modified by Andrew Lohr (www.lohr84.com) from the 1650 A.D. Scots Psalter, "The Psalms of David in Metre," partly influenced by "Young's Literal Translation" of the Bible. Let all use freely.
The tune of "Amazing Grace" will work for this (or most "C.M."--common meter--tunes.)
O happiness of that one who
within the counsel of
the wicked has not walked, nor in
the way of sinners stood
and not sat in the scorner's seat
but in Jehovah's law
is his delight; he meditates
on His law day and night.
He has been like a tree that grows
planted by water's riv'r
which in its season bears its fruit
and his leaf fadeth nev'r
and all he does shall prosper well.
The wicked are not so;
they're like chaff, beaten from the wheat,
which wind away doth blow.
In judgment therefore shall not rise
the ones who wicked are,
nor in th'assembly of the right-
eous shall sinners appear.
For note: the way of righteous ones
to Jehovah is known,
and note: the way of wicked ones
Is lost and overthrown.
Love triune Jehovah, love His lyrics. Better to tell "Madonna" that the Psalms are singable lyrics than to tell the Holy Ghost that they are not. Better not quench the Spirit by refusing His lyrics; better receive what God supplies--He knows we need it. What did Jesus sing? Psalms, obviously; so if they're good enough for God the Son, how about us? (The Psalms command new songs too, but first things first.) To whom do the perfections the Psalms sing of apply? To our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and to His people who put Him on and have Him in our hearts. (Read Psalm 2, then read Revelation 2!) How long does it take to sing all 150 Psalms, all of each? I've done it in under 8 hours total (not all at once, but about 450 minutes of tape); about a Sunday School quarter's worth of time, hint hint. (For more comments about psalm-singing, and other topics, see my website, www.lohr84.com.) To buy materials, www.crownandcovenant.com is one source; I've sung through their 1973 psalter, "the Book of Psalms for Singing," several dozen times. (They have a new one now, "The Book of Psalms for Worship," which I have not seen as of 24 Nov 2009 A.D.)
