Psalm 11 and Psalm 12

Psalms as Songs to Sing

Andrew Lohr
Psalms 11 and 12 (Two separate psalms, together because Associated Content wants 350 words in a written piece. I expect to do separate videos.)

Psalm 11, with two alternative first stanzas because I am not sure what the first stanza means, and a doubled 3rd line in the 3rd stanza. (I suspect I still misunderstand the first stanza.)

One possible tune: "I heard the voice of Jesus say;" 32C in "The Book of Psalms for Singing" or 234 in the "Worship and Service Hymnal" (tune name "Vox Dilecti")

To the overseer by David

I in Jehovah trusted; how
Then say you to my soul
They moved your very mountain! Flee
As quickly as a bird!

Alternative one:
I in Jehovah trusted; how
Then say you to my soul,
"The wicked to your mountain went
As hunters for a bird!"

Alternative two:
I in Jehovah trusted; how
Then to my soul say ye,
"As flees a bird, move far from them
--go to your mountain high."

For look, the wicked bend their bow
Their arrows on the string
They have prepared, that in the dark
At upright heart it spring.

When the foundations are destroyed
What has the righteous done?
Jehovah in his holy tem-
ple is; Jehovah--in the hea-
vens is his judgment throne.

His eyes do see, his eyelids try
Men's sons. The just he tries.
His soul has hated wicked men
And him that violence loves.

Snares fire and brimstone he doth pour
On sinners; and a hor-
'ble wind the portion of their cup
He down their throats doth pour.

For righteous is Jehovah God
He righteousness has loved
The upright see his countenance;
From his face are not moved.

(End of Psalm 11)

Psalm 12

One tune: Our God, our help in ages past; 37A in Book of Psalms for Singing or old Trinity Hymnal #26 (tune name "Saint Anne", C.M.)

To the overseer on the octave, Psalm of David

Jehovah, save, for saintly ones
Have failed, the steadfast ceased
From sons of men; and vanity
Each neighbor speaks to each.

With eyes of flattery and with
Two hearts, not one, they speak.
Jehovah cuts off all such lips,
A tongue that big things speaks;

Who said, by our tongues we do strong-
ly; our lips our own are;
Who is lord over us? But this,
This spoiling of the poor

Because of this, also because
Of groaning needy ones
I now arise, Jehovah says
I set in safety him

Who pants for safety. Sayings of
Jehovah, sayings pure
Like silver tried in earthen fur-
nace, refined sevenfold.

You, O Jehovah, do preserve
Them whose each breath pants "Save!"
You keep us from this genera-
tion, guard us to the age.

Continually the wicked walk
Around, according as
The vileness exalted is
By men, the peoples' sons.

  • How would you make music of what's in the Bible?
  • If we love God, do we love God's own notions of what to sing?
  • Careful on the five-line stanza in Psalm 11! (Repeat that line of music.)
(The link below, last time I tried it, went right to Crown & Covenant publishing. Good. They sell lots of good psalm-singing stuff, notably "The Book of Psalms for Singing.")
