Psalm 2 Words (singable)

Andrew Lohr
Psalm 2

Tune of "Am I a soldier of the cross?" (or other C.M. tune)

Why storm the nations? Vanity
why do the peoples mind?
Kings of the earth do set themselves
and princes have combined

against Jehovah and against
Messiah do they say,
"Let us pull off their ropes from us
and throw their bands away."

He that in Heaven sits doth laugh;
the Lord doth mock them all.
Then he doth speak to them in an-
ger; in wrath vex them all:

"I have anointed my own king;
myself have made him reign
on Zion my own holy hill
his lordship I ordain."

The sure decree I now declare:
Jehovah said to me,
"You are my only Son; this day
I have begotten thee.

"Ask me and for inheritance
the nations I'll make yours.
And your possession I will make
Earth's farthest ends and shores.

"You do as with an iron scep-
ter rule o'er them all,
and as a potter's vessel you
break them in pieces shall."

Therefore now kings be wise; be taught,
O judges of the earth.
Jehovah serve with fear; rejoice,
yet trembling join with mirth.

Kiss ye the Son, lest he be an-
gry and ye lose the way
if once his wrath begin to burn;
bless'd all that on him stay.

Love triune Jehovah, love His lyrics; love Jesus in particular, sing what He sang and sing prophecies about Him and his people. (More comments on Psalm-singing at foot of Psalm 1.) Sources: A.D. 1650 Scots' Psalter, Young's Literal Translation of the Holy Bible.

Of the links below, the first includes more remarks about Psalm-singing by the author of this version. The second is a company, Crown & Covenant Publications, that produces Psalm-singing books and other materials I've used a lot of. I first worked through their "The Book of PSALMS for singing" in A.D. 1992, and have sung through it about four times a year or so since then. (Love God, love God's lyrics--not that that's the only thing lovers of God should do, nor the most important thing, but it is a somewhat neglected thing among a lot of Christians, and while I enjoy a lot of non-Psalm music, I do not think it wise to reject musical supplies that God Himself has delivered to us.) Crown and Covenant has come out with a new version of the Psalms this year (A.D. 2009); I've ordered one but it hasn't arrived yet. The third link is to another version of Psalm 2 by me, using lyrics to fit Scott Joplin's tune "The Entertainer." (I think Mr. Joplin died long enough ago that his copyright has expired--not that I don't see plenty of material on youtube that I'm pretty sure is still under copyright.)

About copyright, I don't want to steal from anyone, and I don't want to get myself or anyone else in trouble; so I use old stuff that anyone is free to use. I may create some things that I want to copyright more strictly and be paid for, but when I create something and say anyone is free to use it--go ahead and use it.
