Modified from A.D.1650 Scot Presbyterian Psalter by me. More modified, and fewer rhymes, than usual.
Common meter. One tune that works is "Materna" ("America the Beautiful"); I use the last half of the tune for the second stanza. (See video when I get it done.) One place among many to find the tune is "46A" in "The Book of Psalms for Singing." Another, #489 in an older "Baptist Hymnal."
Note on the heading: James B. Jordan said for "gittith" think "guitar."
To the overseer on the gittith, psalm of David
Jehovah our Lord, how honor-
able your name in all
The earth. You set your honor on
The heavens. Mm-mm-mm!
From infants and from sucklings' mouths
You founded strength because
Of adversaries yours, to still
Avenger, enemy.
For Lord I see your heavens which
Work of your fingers are
I see the moon that you estab-
lished and I see the stars.
What's man the you remember him?
What is the son of man
That you inspect him and make him
A little lower than
The angels, and with majesty
And honor you surround
Him. You cause him to rule o-
ver the works of your hands.
You have put all under his feet
All cattle oxen sheep
And also wild field-beasts
And birds of heavens' sky
Fish of the seas and all that pass
Through the seas' paths. Jeho-
vah our Lord how honorable
Your name in all the earth!
Not my best effort. Sorry. As with all of these, feel free to make your own improvements, as I've done from the A.D. 1650 Scot Psalter for most of these, and as I do by myself when I sing through "The Book of Psalms for Singing." Since I haven't gotten around to finishing Psalm 120 with the Wagner tune, let alone Psalm 8, I decided to put this out there.
Incidentally, I've put six videos on you tube:
"Osama bin Laden sings Mozart" (a paraphrase of part of Psalm 103 to part of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Machtmusik")
My Jesus, as Thou Wilt--my favorite hymn, with an added stanza I wrote
Judge me, God of my salvation--a paraphrase of Psalm 43 from an A.D. 1929 Psalter
Now to God our strength and savior, a paraphrase of Psalm 81 from the A.D. 1929 Psalter
"Are we better off now than we were two years ago?"--a political song, words and music by me
II Samuel 23:3-4 (some of King David's last words), KJV, to a tune by me
I probably changed the words of the Psalm 43 and 81 paraphrases a bit. I think the videos sound better than they look; watch with your eyes closed.
Added stanza (4th of 5) for "My Jesus, as Thou Wilt"
My Jesus as thou wilt
Reign thou from pole to pole
From end to end of earth
Reign thou in every soul
Bless thou thy church, thy bride
Make her life as thine own
As in Heaven, so on earth
My Lord, thy will be done.
