Psych Recap 03/03/10 - "The Head, the Tail, and the Whole Damn Thing"
Just when You Thought it was Safe to Have Psychic Abilities
Synopsis:After Lassiter takes a page out of Shawn's book and claims a shark attack victim was actually murdered, the guys must then scramble to find the fish and prove him right.
There are SPOILERS in this recap.
Jaws 4 truly is one of the very worst sequels ever made, but that didn't seem to stop it from scaring Shawn Spencer. A man has been pulled off a boat and washed onto the beach in what is an apparent shark attack. Lassiter is on the scene first though and determined to beat Shawn's time on this one.
Lassiter decides to put his foot in his mouth and announce to the press that the victim was not killed by a rather obvious shark attack, but that he was murdered. Shawn convinces Lassie to not regret his murder call, but to stand by it because it could be the greatest moment of his life. A small chance exists that one of the marks in the victim could be a stab wound, but the whole town already is prepared to capture the shark responsible. Just like in Jaws, everyone that could secure a boat was out in the water searching for the...killer?
Oddly enough Shawn ends up doing real police detective work according to Gus while Lassie is following weird hunches and out in the water trying to fish, but he need not look any longer. Shawn's dad happened to catch the killer shark that more than likely killed our John Doe fisherman. Shawn isn't allowed a look at the shark, but Detective Dipstic...err, Lassie is given freedom to see it but too bad because the shark has already disappeared.
Shawn and Gus are now on the case of a missing shark, but it is quickly found. Only, it's been found with a huge gash in it so someone is trying to cover things up. Sadly, a shark expert, Dr. Kimberly Phoenix, steps in to let the group know they have the wrong shark. Thankfully a leg has washed up and providing clues that the man was tied up but also different DNA showing that there was a second victim. Back to the ocean and off to find the correct shark.
Soon the victim's identity is revealed and he is an ocean activist against oil tankers, drilling, and numerous other things. That explains the tie marks on his ankles since he's tied himself to buoys before. Roles have reversed back now as Lassie is a detective once more and Shawn is again a moron. His moronicness gets them on the boat with an old crotchety fisherman though so that they can get out into the water and locate the shark that did or didn't kill the dead activist.
As Henry wines and dines the doctor back home, Shawn soon figures out that the boat they are on happens to be the one of the killer. Notices from ocean activists (like our victim) and even shark tooth knives are discovered. The only problem now is that Shawn and Gus are both out in the middle of the water with the murderer and left alone with an unruly fisherman.
Wow, that's two weeks in a row that really left me underwhelmed. After seeing the preview last week, I was sincerely hoping that the Jaws theme would make me much happier after this one was over, but I was just left kind of hanging out to dry. The stuff with Lassie at the beginning was good and I enjoyed seeing him and Shawn switch up roles, but when the halfway mark came around and they switched back then it took all the wind out of my sails.
I mean, how exciting can a case be when one suspect is a shark? Things might have actually been more interesting if it had been the shark when all was said and done, but we get an old man at the last second and no real mystery. I sincerely hope that next week's finale ends up being more exciting than this. More humor isn't even needed...just something good.
PSYCH Out: Not as good as last week's, but more Juliet in spandex please.
ESP Rating: Thumbs Partially Down
