Pub Review: The Queen's Head Wolverley UK

Angie Mohr CA CMA
The Queen's Head remains one of the most popular and authentic public houses in the Black Country of the West Midlands. Situated just outside of Kidderminster, it is an easy drive from Birmingham or Wolverhampton. Originally a coach house built in the 1600's, the Queen's Inn has been a public house in Wolverley for much of its history.

After extensive flooding in the area in 2007, The Queen's Head has completed extensive renovations to the building and the décor. Its new menu uses locally sourced ingredients whenever possible and has a surprising variety for a pub.

The Ambience of the Queen's Head

The Queen's Inn is as traditional as an English pub gets. Although its slightly dark atmosphere makes it look smaller and more enclosed than it is, the pub is actually larger than most. The original stone floors around the bar and the exposed beams in the ceiling give it a true pub look.

The Queen's Inn is the center of activity in Wolverley and is most often hopping with customers although finding a seat is almost always guaranteed. The pub has a mix of after work pint drinkers and those there for the Inn's extensive dinner or supper menu.

The Queen's Head Menu

The lunch menu at the Queen's Head is served Monday to Saturday from 12:00 to 2:30. The ongoing special is 2 entrees for £6.50. The best entrée by far is the Cod & Chips, prepared in a traditional batter. It is a substantial portion that may require a take away container. The Chef's Curry is also delectable and changes with the seasons to reflect the freshest local produce.

The evening menu is served Monday to Saturday from 5:30 to 9:00 and includes a variety of entrees. The Cock & Bull is Cajun Chicken with an 8 oz sirloin steak served with a choice of sides and is well worth the price. There are also several vegetarian choices on the menu.

A snack menu and a children's menu are also available at meal times. On Sundays, a roast dinner is served from 12:30 to 5 pm with all the expected trimmings. There are several meats to choose from and mashed potatoes, gravy and Yorkshire Pudding are all included for a very reasonable price of £6.50.

Queen's Head Entertainment

The lower level of the Queen's Head turns into a lounge at night and features live music several time a week. Friday and Saturday nights are for visiting bands, Tuesday nights are open mic night and there is jazz in the afternoon on the first Sunday of every month. Upstairs in the bar, quiz nights get started around 8:45 pm and, for a small fee, patrons can enter teams up to 4 people.

See whose turn it is to make the other one hungry! Now I've got to plan a roast beef & Yorkshire pudding for the near future! Dad did one for Mom's birthday, and she had to tell me all about it. That doesn't help. Haven't done Yorkshire pudding in absolutely ages... You know a review is great, when it leaves you wanting to go to the pub as soon as you can get there!

It sounds like a great place. Yorkshire pudding I make once in a while, but it still does not compare with my Aunt's who is from the UK. Interesting article!
