There are, of course, thousands of books available on nearly any subject known to man, with many books in Spanish and Vietnamese to serve the thousands of Hispanics and Asians in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma.
The Fort Smith Public Library, in addition to books, offers DVDs and tapes for rental. There are separate areas for young adults, public reading areas, private reading rooms and study areas.
Used books are available to buy or sell, and there are public meeting rooms, and even an area for snacks and refreshments.
Several public access computers are available to Fort Smith library patrons and a computer lab for group computer instruction. The main branch of the Fort Smith Public Library offers great views of nearby Creekmore Park and of the surrounding area.
The main branch of the Fort Smith Public Library was featured on the cover of the architectural issue of Library Journal in Dec. 2001. It's easy to get to and one could easily spend an entire day at the main branch with all the materials available to the public there. After nearly 8 years, the building is still immaculate. I defy anyone to find a nicer public library anywhere.
All the branches of the Fort Smith Public Library are smaller versions of the same design as the main branch. One other branch is located at 8100 Dallas St. across from Eastside Baptist Church and just behind the shopping center anchored by Kohls department store. This branch is located in a park-like setting with great facilities and a friendly staff.
The Miller Branch of the Fort Smith public library is located at the foot of Fianna Hills at 8701 S. 28th St. I have only been in this branch a time or two, but it is a first class facility, as are all the branches of the Fort Smith library.
The third branch of the Fort Smith public library is the Windsor Branch located at 4701 Windsor Drive. This is the branch nearest to my home and, like the others is quite nice. This location is across from Kimmons Junior High School, where my son will start in the fall, so I may be paying lots more visits to this branch in the future.
The hours of operation for the main branch are 9-9 M-T, Friday from 9-6, Saturday from 10-5 and Sunday from 1-5. The other branches all have one night on which they are open until 9 P.M. and the hours vary slightly from one location to another but are basically the same. The main branch is the only one open on Sundays.
There are often book signings and such events at the main branch. On May 13 of this year, nationally syndicated columnist Sharon Randall will appear at the Fort Smith library.
The city of Fort Smith AR is blessed to have a great public library system with beautiful facilities as fine as any I have seen anywhere. If you are ever in our area or if you live in the area and have never visited the Fort Smith public library, I suggest you pay it a visit.
