Public School, Private School, Homeschool

Which One is Right for You?

Lynda Altman
As many children and parents are getting ready to go back to school the question of where and how to school your children arises. In the US, every state allows for public school, private school and homeschool. However, the laws vary from state to state. Here is what you need to know as a parent.

Public school is the choice of most Americans. Every child is guaranteed the right to attend public school. Public school takes many forms. There are traditional public schools. Many municipalities also offer year round and magnet schools. Then there are charter schools. Contrary to popular belief, charter schools are public schools. Public schools can be a good choice for your child if they are self motivated or if the program your local school is offering works for you. However many parents are not happy with the quality of education their children are receiving from local public schools. Then they must decide if public, private, or homeschool is best.

Private school is another option. This is usually expensive although some religious based schools offer scholarships based on need. There are many different types of private school. Some are faith based. Others focus on a particular style of teaching such as Montessori. Others focus on a particular curriculum such as classical studies. It can be difficult to find a school that will meet your child's needs and fit into your budget. Some private schools do not have the staff or facilities to accommodate children with learning disabilities or special needs. Transportation may also be an issue. Not every private school provides bus or transportation service. You may have to drive your child to school everyday. If you have children in different schools, then this can add to your monthly gas bill. Overall, private school is usually an expensive option and many cannot afford it.

Homeschool can be an option for many families although it is not for everyone. If both parents work full time outside the home during the day, homeschool may not be an option. Every state has laws concerning homeschools. You can find out about what is required in your state at the Homeschool Legal Defense Association's website. It is best to check with your state to be sure that the regulations listed are up to date. If you feel that you have the time and energy to put into homeschooling and you are willing to comply with your state's regulations then homeschooling may be for you. In order top homeschool you need a certain amount of time and energy to commit to it. Expect resistance on some days from your children. Many fist time homeschoolers do not realize what they are getting into. The best way to see if homeschool is right for you is to attend a local homeschool event and talk to the veterans. Contrary to popular belief not every who homeschools their children is a fundamentalist Christian. While there are many Christians who homeschool; homeschoolers include non-religious families, and families from all faiths including Jewish and Muslim.

Choosing the right school option for your children is a difficult task. Public school, private school, or homeschool? The one you choose should fit your child and families lifestyle.
