Public Schools, a New Idea - is it Working?

Is Genius Inherited or Man-made? is it Nature or Nuture?

Rue Cooper
Is the country-wide violence, in our schools, causing some to think more about the idea of schooling their children at home?

Homeschooling began to be more popular in the eighties, when Dr. James Dobson talked about the idea on his radio show. The joy of greater freedom in studies now has two million students being taught at home by parents. The kids go on to excel at colleges and universities.

Why homeschool?

Kids have more freedom in their studies! As adults, homeschooled students have reputations for being self-starters and independent thinkers.

Physical freedom!

Kids study what they want, when and for how long. Each child works at his own learning level. The family no longer lives around the school calendar schedule, thereby, making it possible to visit museums, historical sites, take field trips during the week, and a lot more. An added bonus is: no bullies, boredom, peer pressure, and competition. Children work at their own speed. They can wear the clothes they like, and think their own way.

Self-esteem grows!

Children live in the real world without trends and dangerous experimentation. Families spend more time together, and rebellion and destructive ways seem to drop, after homeschooling begins. Most children can accomplish, in a short time, what it takes some classrooms weeks to cover.

Well-rested kids mean less sick days and doctor bills!

Rest is one of the keys to good health! Early morning studies can be bad for many kids who are not morning people - which can lead to loss-of-sleep. Exhaustion lowers the defenses of the immune system! Much-needed rest will bring about an alert mind hungry to focus and learn.

Some well-known writers and scientists were homeschooled:

Agatha Christie was homeschooled due to her shyness, Pearl S. Buck was taught by a Confucian scholar, Alexander Graham Bell was schooled at home untilt the age of ten, when he started to experience a hearing loss, Thomas Edison left public school after three months and was homeschooled by his mother, and Ansel Adams was taught by his father. Robert Frost became physically ill at the thought of going to school and was homeschooled, Woodrow Wilson was taught by his father, and Mozart was homeschooled by his father as the family toured Europe. Laura Ingals Wilder (Little House books) was another homeschooler, and went on to teach her own school at the age of fifteen. Louisa May Alcott studied with her father - and with Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne!

Home School Legal Defense!

In 1983, Mike Farris and Mike Smith (attorneys), formed HSLDA (Homeschool Legal Defense Association), helping parents win the fight to homeschool. They helped establish the right to legally homeschool in all fifty states, thereby, helping to protect the freedom for future generations.
