Where to Play Tennis in Geauga County for Free

There are only a few public tennis parks in Geuaga County, but those which are still operational are very nice courts considering they are public.

The best local courts are located inside the grounds of our local State Park, which is called Punderson State Park. This park is named after Lemuel Punderson, who was a land agent, and he was also the first permanent settler in Newbury Township which is in the center of Geauga County. He built a dam for running a grist mill, and this created a lake he called Punderson Lake. Much later the land became part of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and the Punderson Manor house is a hotel on the same rural acreage. There is a Public golf course, boating, and camping. Next to the Ski slope is a lodge, and next to that is the Tennis court.

There are 3 courts, which are well lit for night play. These asphalt courts are in nice shape. The park has restrooms in numerous locations, and the Manor House is a fine Hotel on the same State Park Grounds. Free access to courts is granted for Geauga County Residents, or guests of the State Park, whether they are camping, or staying at the Manor House. There are drink vending machines along walkway to the tennis courts. There is plenty of parking right next to teh courts as well. Manor House has a restaurant, and there are other dining establishments within 5 miles. Local dining establishments include 2 ice cream shops when in season.
We use these tennis courts at least once a week in summer. They are very easy to find, and seem to be almost always available. If you plan to play after dark, bring plenty of bug spray since you are essentially right next to hundreds of acres of wooded land.

Middlefield Tennis Park, is now a skate park instead of tennis, the park is empty every time we go past, but skaters are always in the bank plaza at the corner.

Chardon Tennis Courts, this court is now a skate park, this park is always empty, but there are skaters rolling along up on the Chardon square all the time.

Other local tennis venues are situated on the grounds of our local schools. These are usually open to the public, but some are fenced and locked, and you must get approval from the school in order to play there. Usually a call to the school's office can get you the information you will need in order to get access.

Kenston High School has some of the nicer courts in Geauga County. 9500 Bainbridge Road Chagrin Falls, OH

West Geauga High School is similar to Kenston High School. 13401 Chillicothe Road Chesterland, OH
