I happened to come across a place where I can fit in: punkymoms.com. In case you can't tell by the address title, it's a site geared towards mothers with the same stereotype pasted on me.
Punkymoms.com visually appealed to me by their cool red and black layout. On their "About Us" page I read an interesting summary of the meaning behind the site as well as a biographical account of the site's creator that really made me drawn to their message and community.
They start out with the honest statement: "We are a world-wide group of coffee drinking, singing, toy collecting, nose wiping, comic book reading, picture taking, boo-boo kissing, cartoon watching, tear drying, concert going, ink loving, creative, music playing, hair dying, fierce loving, breast or bottle feeding, attachment parenting, sling wearing, sleep lacking, opinion making, hard working mamas. We aren't all of one voice, but together we make a lot of noise." They ask to "leave your judgments at the door" as well encourage all walks of life in the maternal world to feel welcome.
Punkymoms.com states in the "About Us" section that it was started in 2002 by Jessica Seymour. She happened to feel the same public reaction as I do when out and about with her spawn. She decided to create the brainchild of this community, a gathering of mom's with "traditional parenting values" but had an "alternative" look or persona or label to them. The site is now ran by members Sarah Fanning, Jennifer Johnpoll and Winter Wilsey.
Punkymoms.com offers a variety of treasures. You can read member contributed essays and posts about conception, pregnancy, birth, and feeding your baby. There are a multitude of articles on parenting myths, bargains, business resources, parenting woes, food, and home decoration.
In the "Punky Food" section you'll find an assortment of neat recipes. This includes an alcoholic section, cleverly titled "Grog and Moonshine." I guarantee you will not find a lot of these unique dishes in other mom forums.
Punkymoms.com has a great list of links for other sites that might appeal to the Punky Mom. This includes online shops for cool kid and mom items. There are also great links for arts, business, shopping, recreation, home and family.
They even have their own "Punky Shop" that is in the process of growing where you can check out great Punky Mom gear.
To all the mom's who act, dress, and look "different" than the average gal, head over to punkymoms.com. It's free to join, and you'll be surrounded by an array of like-minded mom's who offer great tips, advice, stories, and laughs.

Post a CommentThis website is refreshing. It is nice to see that some people are still being themselves, and not falling into sterotypes. Rock on mamas!!
Great piece, Sarah! Sounds like an amazing community for some moms--we're all looking to find our space, aren't we?
