Punxsutawney Phil Says..

Roni ODonnell
"As the sky shines bright above me,
my shadow I see beside me.
Six more weeks of winter it will be..."

Punxsutawney Phil's quote read by the President of the Groundhog Club, Bill Deeley. Phil's handlers, John Griffiths and Ben Hughes stood by. The crowd cheered and booed after hearing the results.

Phil's home is in Punxsutawney, Penn., where this tradition has been held since 1886. This groundhog is considered the Seer of Seers, Prognosticator of all Prognosticators. This holiday brings thousands to the town to celebrate no matter what the call.

During the early morning hours before Phil appears they have fireworks and entertainment. Celebration lasts all day throughout the town. If you would ever be in the area, it would probably be a great place to check out and maybe pick up a groundhog souvenir.

Phil did not seem stressed at all when he was pulled from him den. Our local weather man interviewed Phil as he sniffed the microphone. There was no comment, but he Phil seemed very comfortable.

Phil's regular home is at the library in Punxsutawney. He has a den with a glass front where people can visit him from outside. He has an entire organization, The Groundhog Club, taking care of him year round. Phil also provides an education to many about the groundhog.

I guess Phil is safer giving the answer of six more weeks. Our winters here are usually longer. At this time our weather man is calling for a winter storm by this weekend. Maybe I can finally get out to get some nice winter pictures.

I live in Cresson, Penn, which is about an hour drive from Punxautawney. I have never been there for Groundhog Day but would love to visit the area for a day. I have driven through it, and I have seen Gobbler's Knob where the celebration takes place but never had time to stop.

Why listen to a groundhog? Because it's fun.

When we lived in NJ I faithfully followed Punxsutawney Phil's projections. Always got a kick out of this annual ritual:)

It feels like winter will never end. The groundhog is probably tired of it too.

Many people do not realize that what seems like folly, silliness, FALLERALL AND FIDDLEDEEDEE in the presenttion of Phil actually brings business and life to a small mountain town... which used and old tradition to make a wonderful winter carnival.... as well as income to a very historic town... Its great... fun and I hope it lasts forever living in Florida.. his prediction does not affect me.. but I still need to know and I close my eyes and remember my last trip to knobbler hill.. early morning...1979.. laughing... drinking hot coffee and stepping back in time...sigh It is a wonderful event

It snowed here last night and this morning. I think 6 more weeks is a safe prediction!
