With this is type of merchandise, brand does matter. You pay for what you get and you need to determine what you will be using your kayak for. You should ask yourself several questions before you buy. Most importantly, what is your skill level? Would you be a beginner or are you much more experienced? Will you be on a peaceful lake or shooting the rapids? Are you planning to go fishing in your kayak? These are the variables in your decision to purchase a kayak. Are you interested in purchasing a one man or two man kayak? How about an inflatable or folding kayak? How about purchasing a used kayak? There are numerous possibilities.
When purchasing a kayak, you could try looking in a big box sporting store or peruse the Internet. There are also mail order places like L.L Bean that sell a number of good quality kayaks that would fit the bill for what ever you have planned quite nicely.
If you are a beginner, the experts advise that you don't always go with the most expensive of kayaks since your skills will rapidly improve and you will probably want to trade it in for a more intermediate type of kayak. If you are planning to take longer trips or portage with your kayak, you will want to consider storage space and a comfortable seat with a good solid back support.
Other things you will need to consider is the kayak once you are out of the water. Is your kayak light weight? Is it easy to load onto your vehicle? Is it manageable to carry while portaging? What type of vehicle rack will you need to tote around your kayak on your vehicle? Do you have storage for your kayak when it is not in use? Don't forget paddles and life jackets!
There are different types of brands of kayaks that are made for various activities and pros and cons that go with each. The "Ocean Kayak Rrrapido" is lightweight and good for surfing, but tends to sit too low in the water. Other brands include Perception, Old Town, Dagger, Hobie, Wilderness Systems, Cobra, and Pelican.
The best advice is do your homework. Talk to experts in the field, not just one or two sales peoples (they tend to be biased). Since a new kayak runs about $1,000 and up, you do not want to rush into purchasing one. A great idea might be to test drive a couple of kayaks that you are interested in to get a feel for them and how they work for you.
