The first thing you probably want to do is decide where you are going to put your new TV. This includes which room and what wall in the room. Next, you should make measurements to find out how much room you have to deal with. If you plan on placing the TV directly on the wall, it may be wise to choose a place near a cable outlet.
You need to also consider the furniture placement and seating setup to ensure you can view the TV where you want to put it. The viewing angle is very important because at certain angles, the quality of the picture will begin to degrade. Also, you should measure the distance from the viewing position to the TV location selected because LCD TVs have optimal viewing distances. For instance, it is best to view an LCD TV that is 35 inches or smaller from 10 feet away, and bigger televisions need longer viewing distances.
Once you have the seating arranged and the appropriate measurements, it's time to start looking for that perfect LCD TV. I would recommend looking at the store first, because online shipping prices for an expensive piece of technology will surely be outrageous. So, once you reach the TVs you will probably notice the picture quality first. Make sure you are looking at the correct size that you measured. It is best to choose an LCD TV with some sort of anti-glare coating so that it will greatly reduce the amount of glare seen with Plasma TVs. I would highly recommend selecting an HDTV because the picture quality and detail is amazing, especially with the new Blu-ray disc technology. If having the best picture quality is important to you, then you should definitely go with an HDTV in your size range. Prices will vary based on size and brand.
Sharp and Samsung both manufacture great LCD TVs, but if you don't have the funds necessary for these brands, don't worry-there are others that should suit your needs just find. For instance, Vizio puts out a very good LCD TV and held the #1 consumer rating at one time. Also, Sanyo has a very good warranty at Wal-Mart that includes a one year over-the-counter exchange with a receipt should anything happen to it. You can find cheaper LCD TVs at discount stores but remember-you generally get what you pay for. Instead, you should probably wait patiently for sales or just dish out the few extra bucks it takes to get a good TV.
So now you have selected and purchased an LCD-what next?
Well, if you decided to go with an HDTV then you will most likely want to also purchase an HDMI cable. However, I would strongly advise for this to be an online purchase only, simply because websites like Amazon have HDMI cables for a very small fraction of the prices found at most stores and they work just as well, I can tell no difference whatsoever. You may want to also consider a surround sound system and some sort of cord management system to deal with all the wires. Please note that you don't always have to mount speakers to the wall, speaker stands are available at most retail stores. Finally, sit back and enjoy the great picture on your new toy!
