Purchasing Season Tickets: Investment in Professional Sports Not Always a No-Brainer

What better way to follow your favorite sports team than to purchase season tickets? Being a season ticket holder brings you a lot of perks, including invitations to meet the team, keeping your same seat throughout playoffs, and giving you the upgrade to relocate for the following season should you choose to do so.

Before you buy, though, make sure you research all your options and talk to a ticket sales representative for more information. Here are some of the things you should think about before you purchase any kind of ticket package.

First, you should look into the available options. The majority of teams offer the basic kinds of packages: full season for all home games, and partial or half season plans for a set amount of games. Look into the prices for each seating area as well as how many games you will get to see on each ticket plan. Then, think about which one you want to purchase by answering these questions:

How often are you able to attend games? Some people, especially corporate customers, purchase season ticket packages that often go unused. Don't purchase a full season ticket package if you're not sure you can be there every game, or at least can't give others your tickets. You are not only paying more than necessary; you are also unfairly taking up seats that could be open to the public.

How much can you afford to spend and who wants to attend games with you? This seems pretty obvious, but you should think about how many seats you need. Do you plan to buy tickets for yourself, your spouse, and three kids for example? Many season ticket prices are charged per seat and could end up costing you more than $1,000. If you can't afford to buy several seats, try purchasing only two or three, and then alternate taking friends or family to fill the other seats.

What are the benefits of having a ticket package? This is not the most important question to answer, but for some, the benefits make them want to renew their package or walk away from doing so. Teams do reward their season ticket holders in several ways, but no matter what, some of the ticket holder base will always complain. If you're not content with what you're getting, you should forego season tickets so you're not complaining all the time about the extras.

Where do you want to sit? In some cases, the staff sets aside certain sections for full season ticket holders or club seat subscribers. This goes back into your spending decision as well. Are you willing to spend more just to sit in your choice section? Do you prefer to have more freedom as to where you sit, or have no preference; just as long as you can see the game?

Lastly, but most importantly, how do you feel about the service you get from the front office? Are the ticket sales representatives polite, knowledgable, and readily available? Or do you feel they are impossible to get a hold of and don't listen to complaints? If you are dissatisfied with your rep's attitude, it is best to complain by dropping your ticket package or choosing not to purchase one at all. Dealing with poor service can be stressful, and that's not what being a sports fan should be about.

It seems like everyone wants a season ticket package for their favorite sports teams, but sometimes, there are reasons people choose not to purchase them. Going down this list of things to consider will give you an idea of how you want to be treated, how much you can afford to spend, and where you want to get the best view of the game. If you have positive answers to all these questions, pick up the phone and contact a ticket sales representative for your local team today.

  • Don't spend more money on tickets than you can afford to.
  • You should consider how often you can attend games; don't buy seats that will constantly go empty.
  • Season ticket holder perks are exciting, but don't make them the only reason why you buy seats.
