Coconut Water, A Natural Hydration Drink
Coconut water is an isotonic drink, which means it naturally contains electrolytes for body hydration. It's called "nature's sports drink." It was used intravenously to prevent dehydration, during World War II and The Vietnam War, when IV solutions were in short supply.
Pure coconut water contains: more than 14 mg calcium and vitamin C, B6, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium and Manganese.
Body Hydration
More than a quart of water is lost during exercise, depending on intensity and air temperature. If not enough water is consumed for cooling through perspiration, dehydration is entered. A good indicator of overall hydration is urine frequency and output.
Nancy Clark, Boston sports nutritionist says, "People should urinate every two to four hours and it should be a light color with significant volume. If urine is dark and concentrated and several hours pass without urinating, it's a sign of dehyration."
Hydration Drink Guidelines
Drink often, 1 litre per hr. for moderate activity in moderate conditions. It's also better to drink continuously, 6-8 oz., every 15-20 minutes. Remember thirst is a delayed response. By the time you're thirsty, the body is already dehydrated. Pre-hydrating is vital before taking part in summer exercise. The American Academy of Sports suggests drinking 14-20 oz. of fluids two hours before exercising. Sports drinks provide sodium and carbs (electrolytes) which help absorb fluid through small intestines, better than plain water.
Beware of bottled water made with BPA , a chemical used in liners for drink containers and a health debate. Remember pets need body hydration too. Water composes more than half the human body and it's impossible to sustain life for more than a week without it. Use pure coconut water to prevent dehydration.
