Protein bars sound like a good idea, but it's hard to find protein bars that actually taste good and that are low in calories, low in sugar, and truly high in protein. The stats on the Pure Protein Blueberry Crumb Cake Protein Bar are pretty good, though. They have 300 calories, which I would not really consider low calorie, but it's not bad if you're eating it for a meal. And these bars are filling enough to make a meal. I like them for a quick and easy breakfast. You can just eat half of one for a healthful, low cal snack, though.
They only have three grams of sugar, although they do have 15 grams of sugar alcohols, so you may not want to try these bars if you're sensitive to sugar alcohols. Three grams of sugar is less than you'll find in many protein bars, and since my gastric bypass surgery, I don't tolerate large amounts of sugar well so these bars work out well for me. The best part is that these bars have a full 28 grams of protein and no trans fat. In comparison to many other protein bars, these are very healthful.
More good news is that they taste good and are filling. They consist of a layer of cake-like substance topped with a layer of blueberry filling. It reminds me of the type of blueberry filling found in popular name brand cereal bars. It's made from real pureed blueberries, apples and plums. The bar is coated with a white coating that is kind of hard to describe, but it reminds me a little of the coating on Zero candy bars, if you've ever eaten one of those. It's sort of like icing but not super sweet.
I buy them at the Vitamin Shoppe, although you can find them at other health food stores as well. This brand also comes in strawberry shortcake flavor. If you're looking for a healthful protein bar that tastes good, give these a try.
