Purex Complete Crystals Softener Review by Front Load Washer Owner

Clothes Smell Good, but Doesn't Soften Towels Well

Carly Hart
Recently, Purex launched a new product, Purex Complete Crystals Softener. This product is unique in that it is in crystal form and goes directly into the drum of a washer, versus being dispensed from the typical fabric softener dispenser used for liquid fabric softeners. Would this product work as well as the liquids I had come to rely upon? I put it to the test.

Purex Complete Crystals Softeners ease of use

This product comes with a plastic top, which is used as a measuring device (so don't throw it away). It snaps onto the top of the bottle, which can be a little frustrating to snap back on after you have measured the product for use. Additionally, the markings to assist you in determining how much to use for a load are hard to read. A nice upgrade to the packaging would be to darken the lines to make it easier to read. However, after using the product a few times, one can easily eyeball it and be fairly close to the correct measured amount.

This fabric softener is dispensed right into the washing machine with your clothes. With a top loader, this is easy to do. If using a front loader and their directions to "add directly in drum with laundry", the crystal product may come back out unless one either reaches to the far rear of the drum to dump it or puts a small amount of clothes in, dumps the crystals, and then continues loading the washer until full. I chose not to dump directly into the drum since I worried that the smaller particles would go through the holes in the drum instead of staying in with the clothes.

How did this product smell?

I purchased Purex Complete Crystals' Fresh Spring Water scent. While I found it pleasing enough, my spouse did not. He found the scent too strong. I used this product to launder our bed sheets and the scent did stay for a few days, though it grew less intense as time wore on.

I also used this product on my towels and was a little disappointed. They did smell fresh; however, they weren't as soft as they normally are when I specifically use a liquid fabric softener.

Did the scent last weeks, as advertised? I didn't have that experience. My bedsheets had a fresh scent for just a few days and then the scent dissipated. I do think though that the scent did stay longer than most other fabric softeners.

Cost

This product retails for about $4 in many stores, with it being more expensive in grocery stores. Currently, Purex is offering a $1 coupon off their Complete Crystals product via Facebook. This price point is in line with other fabric softener products on the market.

This product is also available in two other scents, Lavender Blossoms and Tropical Splash.

DISCLOSURE OF MATERIAL CONNECTION:
I received a free coupon for this product via a contest. Though the product was free to me via the coupon, the opinions stated herein are 100% my own.

I tried the Purex crystals when they first came out and really liked them. I agree the lid/measuring cup is poorly designed though.

Good review. I may have to try this. I use a liquid softener right now.
