Purina Cat Chow Complete Vs Purina Indoor Formula

Angelie MacKenzie
When my cats were kittens, I fed them the Friskies Kitten canned food mixed with the Friskies Kitten dry food. I've always felt that was the best kitten food. Some kittens can be picky eaters when they are being weaned, but I didn't have any problems getting them to eat the Friskies Kitten Food. And they grew up to be healthy adult cats. After they were one year old, I switched to the Purina Cat Chow Complete Formula dry cat food. My cats immediately took to the new food, they loved it.

I have been using the Purina Cat Chow Complete Formula for many years. My cats always maintained their weight. They were neither underweight nor overweight. Whenever I took them to the veterinarian, he would comment about how healthy they were. It was obvious that they were eating a great cat food.

When Purina came out with the Indoor Formula, I wasn't sure what to think since the food was new. You never know when something new comes out if it'll be discontinued soon after for not being as good as they thought it'd be. But reading about the Indoor Formula, it sounded like a great idea. When cats live outside, they can eat grass and other greens that indoor cats simply don't have access to. Back then my cats were in the house, so I felt like this was the perfect food for them. Still being skeptical, I called my veterinarian for an opinion. The people who worked in my vet's office asked him about the food. He said that he recommended it, so I bought it the next time I needed cat food.

My cats ate twice as much of the Purina Indoor Formula as they did the Purina Complete Cat Chow. At first, I suspected that the cats were eating more because it tasted so good being something new. Animals always seem to enjoy something different from what they usually eat. However, after a few weeks, they were still eating twice as much of the Indoor Formula as they had of the Complete Formula. I didn't think too much of it because I felt like the food was healthy for them. Not to mention it cost more than the Complete Formula, and being more expensive, it seemed even better. I really felt like I was doing something good for my cats by buying the Indoor Formula for them.

My mom, however, she was concerned about the cats being on that new cat food. She felt like the cats were eating more because maybe there wasn't enough of anything filling in the Indoor Formula. Basically, she thought the cats were technically starving on it. While we couldn't really tell, it seemed like the cats were losing weight even though they were eating more food than they ever had.

I shared my mom's concern about the cats eating too much and possibly starving on that Indoor Formula. When we bought cat food again, we switched back to the Complete Formula. Immediately, the cats started eating the amount that they used to. They seemed happier and weren't always hungry. I'll never switch their food again unless I am forced due to a recall or something. My cats grew up on Purina, and considering my oldest is thirteen years old, I'd say it's a great cat food.

If someone still wants to use the Indoor Formula for their cats, they should ask their veterinarian before changing their pet's food. If you're going to insist on using the Indoor Formula, I'd recommend buying both the Indoor Formula and the Complete Formula, and then combining them. However, I never tried combining the foods myself. This would be something else to ask your veterinarian about before doing it. But me, I'm sticking with the Purina Complete Formula.

Thank you for writing about your experience. I feed my cats the Complete formula and I was debating on switching to the Indoor Formula. Because of your article, I didn't switch. But I bought some little cat grass plants for my cats to nibble on. Thanks again.
