"Purple Rain" a Movie Worth Remembering

A.M. Morgan
Prince's semi autobiographical movie "Purple Rain" may not be a big budget blockbuster film but the complex range of emotions it takes viewers on is something worth remembering. The movie's soundtrack vividly paints a picture of the lead character's struggle to develop as an artist, compassionate lover and a person coping with painful elements of the past and present. "Purple Rain" the title song uncovers the regret of hurting someone and the impact a person's upbringing has on the psyche. The opening line of the title song expresses the anguish of causing someone sorrow and pain while never intending to.

Prince is a rising star in the movie searching to find a way to create music that an audience can relate to in a world that doesn't always see artistic differences as intriguing. The song, "When the Doves cry" explores the reality of how person's character is influenced by maternal and paternal interactions. The lead character's parents create a haunting reality of the casualties of love in which many arguments expose the wounds of personal demons that each individual family member must face. "The Beautiful Ones" is a song that sets the mood for exploring the sentiments of a man in love that finds a beautiful lover who also hurts and leaves him all alone to wallow in sorrow. The most standout lyrics of this song reminds listeners that, "The beautiful ones hurt you every time." "Take me with you" is an up-tempo song about two people in love that enjoy the pleasure of each other's company regardless of the situation, place or circumstance. This is a small glimpse into the soundtrack for a movie that successfully delivers a memorable message of the self determination to fulfill one's passions despite any obstacle real or imagined. Overall, Prince also known as "The Kid" in "Purple Rain" certainly graduates to an artist worthy of respect as a man and in the title of "Musical Genius" by the time is movie is over.

Was never a huge Prince fan myself (although I will be the first to admit he is immensely talented), this movie ROCKED! What a fascinating portrayal of Prince's early years and the Minneaplois music scene this was.

I love this movie. One of the best movies of all time. One question, what about "I would die for you". That is my favorite song.
