Pursuing a Degree in Software Engineering Online

Mike Wilson
Many of us have considered going to school online. There are many courses available on the Internet, but the one that interests me most is software engineering. (How does software work, and how could I help to make it work better?) As with any decision, one needs to employ the proper research when deciding whether or not to pursue becoming a software engineer. Also, are online courses the best route to take while pursing your goal? Today, I would like to submit to you what I have learned through my own research about online software engineering courses.

What exactly does a software engineering course cover?

This is a hard question to answer completely, mostly because of the ever expanding range of different programs various schools offer. However, many software engineering courses cover a broad range of similar topics. These topics may include: programming fundamentals, database design, operating systems, programming languages, human-computer interaction and more. If you're a computer nut like me, the previously mentioned classes will be right up your alley. However, with many degree programs, there is some standard, non-computer related, college-level courses, that you will also have to complete. These courses may include the following: probability and statistics, calculus 1-3, linear algebra, physics, technical writing, engineering economics, and more. Finally, many online courses will ask you to present several projects to show off what you can do with your new talent, knowledge and skill. Projects will vary from school to school, program to program, but more than likely, you will have created several pieces of software before every stepping out into the workforce.

Why should I take a software engineering course online?

Unlike our first question, the answer to this one is simple. If you want to become a software engineer, it's pretty obvious that you're most comfortable working with computers; why wouldn't you be most comfortable attending class on one? Just off the top of my head, I can think of four reasons why I personally would rather attend this course online, rather than in a "traditional" school setting.

#1. Your job will be revolved around a computer. Better start early.

In a traditional class setting, there will be computers available, and an instructor waiting to answer questions. While having an instructor may be helpful, when you enter the real-world, there will be nobody to lean on. Start relying on yourself earlier, so you aren't embarrassed later.

#2. Comfortability

"Go to class" in a three-piece suit, or in your undies!! There is no need to put on a big fashion show when you attend class online. Get your work done, and get back to real-life!

#3. Zero transportation difficulties.

Gas money, parking spaces, stop and go traffic. All the problems of transportation have been taken care of when you choose to pursue your software engineering course on-line, instead of the "traditional" route.

#4. Keep your life.

Many of us work full-time jobs, and also have full-time families. Giving up our schedule even at the most flexible of traditional colleges is sometimes impossible. When you pursue your software engineering course online, you decide when to "go to class," not the professor.

Where can I find more information??

Simply Google search "Software Engineering Courses Online" and you will receive about 4,550,000 results. Of those results, some are useful and some are not. Here are three websites I've found that give you a little more info.

Going back to school is an important decision. One that must be researched well in order to come to the right conclusions. I hope that this article has helped you in your search. In today's economy, industry shrinks and shrinks, while software development and engineering grows and grows. You have already chose a wise degree to pursue, now your task is to pursue it wisely.
