Put This in Any Liquid Thing & There is Thy Gold, Worse Poison to Men's Souls

C. Jeanne Heida
Romeo's conversation with the Apothecary has been one of the hottest Google Search phrases all week. These bit and pieces of bone chilling dialog are all part of a popular new "What Drives Edward" contest sponsored by Volvo. For those of you who are playing The Twilight Saga: New Moon contest, an early puzzle to solve in this on-line game are the lines of this spine tingling dialogue scrambled over the screen in a jumbled up mess. The goal is for you to find the original dialog as written and then put the lines in the right order.

These great lines are part of a chilling dialog between Romeo and the apothecary from William Shakespeare's play about two teenaged lovers, "Romeo and Juliet." In this particular scene, Romeo begs for poison from an apothecary (a Middle Ages pharmacist) in Mantua, after learning of Juliet's "supposed" death. Towards the end of the scene, the apothecary gives Romeo these instructions:
Put this in any liquid thing you will,
And drink it off; and, if you had the strength
Of twenty men, it would dispatch you straight.

Romeo's reply to the apothecary's deadly instructions is as follows:
There is thy gold, worse poison to men's souls,
Doing more murders in this loathsome world,
Than these poor compounds that thou mayst not sell.
I sell thee poison; thou hast sold me none.
Farewell: buy food, and get thyself in flesh.
Come, cordial and not poison, go with me
To Juliet's grave; for there must I use thee.

Need a couple of helpful tips? Page 2 of this article will instruct you how put this sequence in the right order AND offer up some hints & tips for navigating through Phase 3 of the puzzle.

The first time I entered the lines into scrambled phrases puzzle, it was with the apothecary's lines stacked on top of each other on the left column, and Romeo's reply on the left. This will pop up a "try again" message. The correct sequence in which the phrases must be entered are from side to side...with the first phrase entered on the top of the left column, the second phrase on the top of the right column, and so on until the end. Placed in this order, you'll get the answer right, two new moons, and then on to the next puzzle which involves putting together a broken piece of glass. And once you've finished Phase 2 and find yourself stuck on Phase 3, this article will help you fix some technical problems plus offer up a few hints to get Bella pass the mob and on her way to Edward.
