Put Your Yard Waste to Good Use and Make Mulch

Compost Pile

No matter the season working on the front or back yard leaves many homeowners griping and complaining about the hard work it takes to maintain the property. For many months it is mowing, in the fall it is raking and then almost year round you have dead branches or trees falling that require to be picked up, bundled and put out for the trash man.

The reason most people complain is because they get nothing out of this labor but waste. To put a spin on your hard manual labor, take all of your waste, and make mulch.

To make mulch is very easy to do without adding anything other then the three things I mentioned earlier. Every year home owners go to the store and buy mulch for their trees, shrubs and gardens while throwing out all of the natural ingredients at home to make mulch.

This season try something different. Find a spot in your yard which is a little out of the way and make it your repository for mulch making. When you mow your lawn, empty your clippings into this location. If you have a mulcher on your mower, rake up any thick areas and move them to the repository.

In the fall when the leaves begin to drop rake them up into small piles near your repository. Mow over each pile to shred up the leaves into smaller pieces and then rake the remains into your mulch repository. Do this one and off all season to ensure you have enough mulch for the next year.

As sticks fall in your yard or you cut down a tree, rent or use a wood chipper to break down and shred the wood into smaller chunks. Add these little chunks to your grass clippings and leaves and mix it all in.

Each piece you mix in brings with it nutrients that your plants will need in the upcoming year. In addition the mulch will work to maintain the right moisture level and protect the plants from a late frost.

By creating your own mulch each year you can save yourself a good deal of money from buying the bags at the store and save your back from the effort required to dispose of all of this natural waste in any other way. You can also apply this mulch as you make it and this means a continual supply of mulch all year round in case you ever run low or build a new bed for flowers.
