So what is Puzzle Pirates anyway? Puzzle Pirates is an on-line gaming community where players of all ages can create a pirate alter ego to use in an on-line world of swashbuckling fun. Players can choose the looks of their pirate from hairstyle down to hairstyle. Later in the game players will have the opportunity to purchase and wear new clothing as well as equip their pirate with better weapons and pets or familiars, as they are known in the game. Of course there is a catch, while anyone can play the game for free there are parts of the game that can only be accessed by people who pay a subscription fee. There is plenty to do in the game with out paying the fee but you will not be able to own your own ship, sail a ship, or be an officer or captain in a crew. The fee for the game is about ten dollars a month and can be paid with a credit card or paypal.
One of the things I like best about Puzzle Pirates is that the game is safe and enjoyable for all ages. Foul language is not tolerated on the game and it is rare to run into anyone causing trouble. My elementary aged children can play the game and I can enjoy it as well. The only thing some families may find objectionable are the references about rum which are every where. Pirates require rum on their ships to sail, there are games in which players play a puzzle game to "make" the needed rum. Other than this the game is family friendly.
Game play in the world of puzzle pirates is varied. Pirates can take jobs on the island to produce the things that pirates all need such as clothing, weapons, ships, and of course rum. The items are produced by playing various puzzle games. While working in shops or stalls on the islands you can earn the most coveted items of all pieces of eight or POE as they are known. Pieces of eight are needed to purchase items and can also be wagered in other puzzling games such as sword fights or rumbles, these games are played against other players or computer generated players depending on the circumstances.
Obviously pirates do not spend all their time on the land and you will not either when playing puzzle pirates. In game play you will be able to sail the high seas with other pirates. While sailing on ships you will do several puzzles that will help keep the ships sailing smoothly and have the chance to earn some pieces of eight depending on the type of voyage you are on. Some types of voyages are called pillages or pillys. When on a pillage with a crew you will have the chance to win pillaged treasure from other ships. You will participate in sword fights and rumbles against other crews. There are also missions called flotillas, and blockades, in these missions you will try to sink other ships and protect islands from invaders with out the ship you are on sinking. The last type of voyage you can participate in is a monster hunt; which is a new addition to the game. In the monster hunt mission you will sail on large ships and battle the mythical sea creatures of Atlantis. There is a lot of treasure to be won on these voyages but they are difficult and again there is a chance you might sink and walk away with no treasure and an injury. Although getting an injury in real life is something you would want to avoid in the game of Puzzle Pirates injuries are coveted and their resulting peg legs, eye patches and hooks are seen as very cool accessories. During all types of play you have the ability to chat with and interact with other players. When you find a group of people who you enjoy playing with you can join their existing crew or make your own. You then will know when they are playing and you can make plans to go on voyages or even have parties.
If you would like to check out this fun family friendly game you can go to http://www.puzzlepirates.com/ to learn more and play for free. You can also check out the YPPedia to learn how to start playing the game. If that is not enough a quick search for Puzzle Pirates on YouTube will bring up many how-to videos as well as some other pirate fun.
