Puzzle Pirates and Disney's ToonTown: A Look at Two Fun, Non-violent MMO Games

K. Bennett
If you are looking for fun, non-violent MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) games then you might want to consider Puzzle Pirates and Disney's ToonTown. Both games are fun for both children and adults alike.

Puzzle Pirates is a free game available for download at www.puzzlepirates.com. Puzzle Pirates is really a set of mini-games that you play to increase your character's proficiency level in various sailing or pirating skill. Each mini-game is a different type of puzzle game. For example the "sailing" mini-game is somewhat akin to Tetris and the "bilging" mini-game is reminicent of Bejeweled.

The mini-games not only work to increase your character's level but also provide a way for a group of characters to work together on a pirate ship or in the "navy" to make money. Money can be used to purchase supplies for your pirate character or ship. You can also purchase pets and housing. Pirate characters can also open shops on various port islands and sell clothing and weapons (used in various mini-games).

Disney's ToonTown is available free for download at www.tontown.com. It does have a monthly charge of $9.99. In this game you create your own toon character and take to the streets to battle the Cogs, robot creations that are trying to take over ToonTown and eliminate fun. In battle you use gags such as squirting flowers, oil slicks, magnets, and feathers to overload the Cogs' systems.

The primary object of the game is to work together with other toon characters and defeat the Cogs and restore fun to ToonTown. But, there are also mini-games that can be played in the "playground." To progress the game you are given toontasks. Some tasks will allow you to unlock new gags while others will give your toon a fun new look for a while (you can run around as a tiny toon or giant toon for example).

Disney's ToonTown is perhaps more suited for children than Puzzle Pirates due to the chat features. In Puzzle Pirates you can chat with other players simply by typing so you might see a few vulgarities once in a while. However, in ToonTown there is a chat menu system with which preprogrammed chat phrases can be selected. There are a lot of toonchat phrases to choose from so you are not too limited in yor communication. If you have a real-life friend you wish to chat with you can enter a code and are then able to chat using the keyboard.
