Matthew Ray: 2006 wasn't the best year for you, is 2007 better?
Escape: Definitely. I have gone through a bunch of changes-leaving my former management and striking out on my own. I'm doing different types of music, more remixes, more stuff that I want to do.
What's the feedback so far?
Incredible, 2007 has been one of my best years yet.
You were once a regular in the Miami club scene,
what happened to that town's nightlife?
Miami changed so much! It used to be so amazing, then well...It's coming back now. TWILO Miami is open and it's doing Saturdays, Score has a good night too. It's not anywhere near it used to be....the gay scene is there is kinda hurt.
Manhattan's nightlife?
It's changed too. With the closing of Roxy, there are now a couple of different parties vying for dominance. I haven't gotten a chance to see what is going on at all of them, but the crowd has been divided. No clear cut winner yet.
What can we expect from you when you spin?
You can expect a lot of fresh music, stuff that is new from me and my peers. Plenty of staples and favorites, with new edits and versions. But a
whole lot of fresh sounds.
Dance and anthems or hip-hop?
More than enough dance and anthems. I'm especially trying to bring back the anthems and vocal records. I love playing that music. I want the energy to stay up, and that's the sound that does it. The younger crowd needs hip-hop remixes, its harder to spoon-feed them other music. But the middle road is dance music remixes to hip-hop songs.
Give us some info on your new remixes...."Like This" by Kelly Rowland...
Did that with Tony Calliochio , the man behind "My Love Is Your Love" and so many Jonathan Peters records. We approached it as a classic mix, lots of pianos. Very uplifting, gonna be a staple.
"Force Of Nature" by Sunshine Anderson?
Johnny Viscious and I worked on that track together. A vocal anthem with a groovy Mary J. Blige feel.
"Rollercoaster" by Erika Jayne?
That was with Johnny too. Super high energy, slightly tribal, very campy, a peak hour track with a strutting runway feel.
Theme to Dreamgirls
It was released w/ DVD last May.A Tony Calliochio/Escape partnership. I'm sure everyone in America is probably guessing this is a straight-up anthem.
