Q&A with Pavel Pardo

What were the reasons in your desire to come to MLS and specifically join the Chicago Fire? / ¿Cu¡les fueron las razones de su deseo de venir a la MLS y, espec­ficamente, unirse al Chicago Fire?

The Fire came to me and said they had a new project and challenge. I knew the manager Frank [Klopas] and I think it is a good challenge for me. These are the reasons why I came to Chicago. I wanted to come to MLS to improve myself and to experience the challenge of playing and living in another country. I wanted to experience another place, another language and the mentality of how people in the United States think and act in soccer.

El Fire se acerc³ y me dijo que hab­a un nuevo proyecto y desaf­o. Yo concia al director Frank [Klopas] y creo que es un buen reto para m­. Estas son las razones por las que vine a Chicago.Yo quer­a venir a la MLS para mejorar me a m­ mismo y tener la experiencia de jugar y vivir en otro pa­s. Quer­a la experiencia de vivir en otro lugar, conocer otro idioma y conocer la mentalidad de c³mo la gente en los Estados Unidos piensa y trata con el fºtbol.

You say you came here because you wanted to learn another language but your English is pretty good. How did you learn? / Usted dice que vinieron aqu­ porque quer­a aprender otro idioma, pero su ingl©s es bastante bueno. ¿C³mo lo aprendi³?

I would like to speak more English. Of course it's not perfect, but you can always learn more and speak better. This was one of the reasons why and also for the future because my future is here and in Europe. Mexico is going to be there always but I would like to go into marketing in the U.S. and Europe. I would like to stay here or in Europe because Mexico is my home and it will always be there.

Me gustar­a hablar m¡s el Ingl©s. Por supuesto que no es perfecto, pero siempre se puede aprender m¡s y hablarlo mejor. Esta es una de las razones por la cual vine a los Estados Unidos, para mi futuro, mi futuro est¡ aqu­ y en Europa. M©xico va a estar ah­ siempre, pero me gustar­a trabajar en la mercadotecnia en los EE.UU. y Europa. Me gustar­a quedarme aqu­ o en Europa, porque M©xico es mi pais natal y siempre estar¡ ah­.

You've played in World Cups, won tournaments at both the national team and club level. What do you count as your single greatest achievement as a player? / Usted ha jugado en Copas del Mundo, gan³ muchos campeonatos, tanto en el equipo nacional y al nivel de club. ¿Cu¡l es tu mayor logro como jugador?

I think, like you said, I've been to two World Cups but I think the most important success was playing in Europe and winning the Bundesliga with Stuttgart in 2007.

How well-versed are you in the Club's history? / ¿Qu© tanto sabes de le historia del club?

Well, I know that it is a good team. For me, it is one of the top five in the league. Now I know that they are not winning as much and it's a very young team. I think it could be good for me because I have experience and I can transmit that here. I know this club has a strong history with a lot of success but now we need to get results because we have to win and we have to think step-by-step. That's winning on Wednesday vs. Philadelphia, on Sunday vs. Vancouver, taking each game one at a time.

Bueno, s© que es un buen equipo. Para m­, es uno de los cinco mejores en la liga. Ahora s© que no est¡n ganando tanto y que es un equipo muy joven. Creo que podr­a ser bueno para m­ porque mi experiencia, y la puedo transmitir aqu­. S© que este club tiene una gran historia, con mucho ©xito, pero ahora tenemos que obtener resultados, porque tenemos que ganar y tenemos que pensar paso a paso. Eso es ganar el mi©rcoles contra Filadelfia, el domingo frente a Vancouver, tomando cada juego uno a la vez.

You've been to Chicago many times, what are the things you enjoy about the Windy City? / Tº has estado en Chicago muchas veces, ¿Cu¡les son las cosas que disfrutas mas de la Ciudad de los Vientos?

I like the city. It's a good cosmopolitan city, I know there are a lot of Mexicans, but you can find a lot of Europeans. I like this big city. It is not as big as Mexico City or New York, but it is an important city in the U.S.

Me gusta la ciudad. Es una buena ciudad cosmopolita, s© que hay muchos mexicanos, pero se puede encontrar una gran cantidad de europeos. Me gusta esta gran ciudad. No es tan grande como la ciudad de M©xico o Nueva York, pero es una ciudad importante en los EE.UU.

For supporters that are less familiar with your career, could you describe your qualities and what you expect to bring to the Fire / ¿Para los afficionados de que est¡n menos familiarizados con tu carrera, podr­as describir tus cualidades y que esperas aportar al Fire?

I have a good mentality. I have good technic. I'm able to watch and read the game in a way that not all players are able to do. Of course, here I am going to give my all, I'm excited to give everything I have for this team.

Tengo una buena mentalidad. Tengo una buena t©cnica. Soy capaz de ver y leer el juego de una manera que no todos los jugadores son capaces de hacer. Por supuesto, aqu­ voy a dar todo de m­, estoy emocionado de dar todo lo que tengo para este equipo.

The Fire have scheduled an international friendly with Chivas de Guadalajara on Wednesday, September 14^th. As someone that played over 300 games from Club America, what will that match mean to you? / El Fire ha programado un partido amistoso con las Chivas de Guadalajara el mi©rcoles, 14 de septiembre. Como alguien que jug³ m¡s de 300 partidos con el Club Am©rica, que significa este partido para ti?

Well, when I was younger I was playing with Atlas and playing against Chivas was a derby. When I played with America, it was a big derby in Mexico City and internationally. Chivas is always a rival for me.

Cuando era m¡s joven estaba jugando con Atlas y jugar contra Chivas era un cl¡sico. Cuando yo jugaba con Am©rica, era un gran clasico en la ciudad de M©xico y a nivel internacional, Chivas siempre va a ser un rival para m­.

Finally, what number will you be wearing for the Fire? / Por ºltimo. ¿Qu© nºmero vas a usar en el Fire?

Normally I use 13 and with the national team I used 8 but now since both those numbers are being used already, I respect that and my new teammates and I've chosen to wear 17.

Normalmente yo uso el numero13 y en la Selecci³n Mexicana, utilizo el 8, pero estos nºmeros no est¡n disponibles y respeto a mis nuevos compa±eros a s­ que he optado por usar el numero17.

Mexico has played a lot of games against the U.S. National Team and you've played in a lot of those matches. Could you speak about the rivalry between the U.S. and Mexico and what you think of the level of soccer in this country? / M©xico ha jugado muchos partidos contra el equipo nacional de EE.UU. y tu has jugado en muchos de esos partidos. ¿Podr­as hablar sobre la rivalidad entre los EE.UU. y M©xico y lo que piensas del nivel de fºtbol en este pa­s?

The rivalry is big and of course I have played many times and I know about Mexican players and the U.S. team. I think like I have said before that the U.S. Men's National Team is always growing slowly and sometimes it takes very big steps. That is why I watch what European countries and the U.S. are doing. Lot of countries in Europe and the U.S. are growing so fast in the game. They have long term projects and I think they are doing things really well.
