Overcome rejection
As a door to door salesman you may visit 200 or 300 homes before you even make a sale. Door after door is going to be closed with you ever making a sale. You have to have thick skin and the ability to get past this. Good sales people will forget about their last rejection and quickly move on to the next opportunity. If you dwell on your past failures you will quickly become negative and begin to lose hope. If this happens you could lose your self confidence and begin to doubt your ability.
Attitude
When you go door to door selling products and services it is going t be very tough. It is imperative that you have a good attitude and keep your spirits high. No one wants to do business with a person that appears to lack confidence and doesn't have a good attitude. You should strive to keep a good attitude at all cost. Sometimes you have to motivate and inspire yourself. If you talk with some of the top sales people they will tell you that they have certain rituals that they perform daily to keep themselves motivated. Some listen to certain song that has a very up tempo beat and others will perform some affirmations such as, " I will make 10 sales today". They might site this phrase 10 or 20 times to work themselves into a high spirited frenzy. They are able to carry this attitude with them through out the day to each house they frequent.
Energy
You must be able to keep your energy level up. The best way to do this is work In some type of exercise and make sure you are eating healthy foods. The food you eat can definitely determine your energy level. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and whole grain foods. Stay away from foods that are processed and refined and have a lot of sugar, salt, and cholesterol. You will definitely do a lot of walking during the course of the day.
Professional
In most cases you only have a few minutes to make a good impression. Your first impression will determine if you are allowed inside a home or not. Maintain your professionalism no matter how tempted you are to stray away to a more relaxed mode. Customers like sales people that are professional, courteous, trust worthy and treat them with dignity and respect.
Product knowledge
Once inside a potential customer's home you must demonstrate superiors product knowledge. Customers will know if you know what you are talking about or if you are just trying to wing it. If they sense the slightest lack of knowledge on your part you won't get the sale even if you are allowed to finish your presentation. Know all of the features and benefits and how they will benefit the customers various needs.
Perseverance
You have to have perseverance and the ability to continue on no matter how tough things get. You could be in for some long hours and days. You have to learn a lesson from every encounter. Continue to do the successful things and make adjustments and amendments to the things that did not work so well.
