Qualities Needed to Become a Bank Branch Sales Manager

Melvin Richardson
If you wan to become a branch manager for a bank you need good analytical skills. You also need to be able to handle customer inquiries and solve their problems on a day to day basis.

You will probably be required to have a Bachelor of Science degree to be considered. These qualifications may vary from bank to bank.

Business development

Managers need to go out into the community and generate business. The days of branch managers sitting behind a desk are long gone. Banking is a competitive business and if you wait for the business to come through the door it will never arrive. Bankers have to get out into the community and network at different events. One favorite place is the chamber of commerce. You can establish so many contacts and you just never know who has a need for some banking products.

Sales skills

Bank managers should be excellent sales people because they will have to convince their clients that they bank has the right products and services for them. You need the ability to find out what the customers needs are and then match the features and benefits of the products and services to their needs. You have to be able to overcome objections.

Motivator

Within a branch there will always be other employees that report to the manager. These employees will be responsible for hitting certain goals and objectives and a manager must be an effective motivator. Sometimes employees need inspiration in order for them to go to the next level.

Reports

There will always be an abundance of reports that managers will have to have the need to interpret. If the branch is not hitting their goals the manager will need to see where the variance is and why.

Goals and objectives

Branch managers are responsible for hitting certain goals. These goals can be the number of checking accounts, savings accounts, home equity loans, home equity lines of credit, or even overdraft protection accounts. Every person in the branch will have goals that need to be accomplished and the manager needs to make sure everyone is hitting their goals. If everyone is contributing to the goal setting process then the overall goals and objectives of the branch will be met.

Employee development

Branch managers are responsible for developing their employees so that they can take only greater responsibilities. Development can take the form of training and education or learning a new process within the branch. A teller may be looking forward to becoming a head teller. A manager needs to be able to map out a road map that enables the teller to reach their goal. This has to be done with all employees within a branch.

Attitude

Branch managers should have great attitudes because they will be dealing with customers and employees all day long. A positive attitude goes along way when it comes to establishing great customer service and customer relationship management.
