Needs of the customers
In order to find out the customers needs you will have to ask probing questions. A lot of times you will need to utilize open end questions. These are questions that cannot be answered with a yes or not. They force the customer to elaborate and give more of an explanation about what they are looking for. This is a fact getting quest for the sales associates and later on down the line they will be able to match the customer with the appropriate product and service. A customer may ask for one product or service but after probing further the sales associate may uncover another need of the customer. Sometimes customers will provide clues to their needs. If a customer is complaining about return item fees then you may want to suggest the overdraft protection.
Knowledge of products and services
A sales associate should have outstanding product knowledge. This helps them meet the needs of the customer better. If they are familiar with the features and benefits of the products they will be able to match the customer's needs with a specific feature or benefit thereby increasing their chance of making a sale. Sometimes a sales associate will have to tap into the emotional attachment of a customer to find out what the customer is truly looking for then match a product to that need. There is nothing more frustrating for a customer than having to deal with bank personnel that don't have all of the answers because they don't know the products and services.
Attitude
Sales associates should have very good attitudes. Some customers will not purchase a product or service if the sales associates don't have the right attitude, even if they need the product or service. Associates should always be friendly and greet customers with a smile. This will go a long way in gaining the confidence of the customer. Everyone just loves a person with a great attitude and bank customers are no different.
World class customer service
Providing world class customer service will be another skill that a sales associate should have. When you provide excellent customer service when your customers need another product or service they will not go to another bank because they will return right back to you. The vast majority of customers will not even go to another bank employee because they have come to know and trust you. You will not have to worry about getting referrals or have your customers return to the bank.
Goals
Sales associates are required to hit certain goals and objectives. You should have the ability to find out if the customer has other needs such as different products and services. Helping customers meet all of their needs by offering the right products and services will help a sales associate hit all of their goals and objectives.
Professional
A sales associate should always remain professional with the customer. Customers like doing business with people that are professional and courteous. Never be too comfortable with a customer. This could cause you to sacrifice your professionalism and you just never know who is in the bank watching.
