Qualities Needed to Be a Teacher

Melvin Richardson
Communicator: If you are looking at teaching as a career or profession then there are certain qualities and attributes you will need to become successful. You will have to be a good communicator, especially with your students. Teachers consistently have to meet with parents, participate in group meetings, meet with principles and other groups and organizations just to name a few. As a teacher you need to relay the information to students in a manner that allows them to grasp and understand the concepts and ideas particular to your sessions. Teachers must be able to provide the X's and Y's to student regarding their curriculum.

Control: Teachers have to be able to maintain control not only of the students but of themselves as well. There will be some situations that can test a teacher's patience. The generation that we now see is unlike any other generation they come from homes with different demographics and values than what we saw even ten or 15 years ago. Sometimes a teacher will have to exhibit a certain amount of discipline in order for the class to flow smoothly. If a student disrupts the class a teacher has to be able to restore order otherwise other students will not be able to learn effectively and efficiently.

Humor: Every so often teachers need to have a sense of humor. Not only will the teacher be able to relax more but the students will as well. Humor helps to take the edge off the day. A teacher needs to be able to instill a sense of humor while at the say time maintain control and still be respected by the students.

Passionate: Teachers have to be passionate about what they are teaching and they have to be passionate as they teach students. Students will gravitate towards the energy and excitement that a teacher brings to the classroom. It is easier for students to learn when they are interested in the material because the teacher is presenting it in an exciting manner.

Teacher must be prepared for some long days. After the class ends they have to attend meetings, grade papers, and participate on committees. Sometimes they can spend quite a bit of time calling parents regarding a particular problem or situation that a student is facing. Teachers have to be prepared for the unexpected because everyday can bring it's own set of challenges and problems. As a teacher you have to make the necessary time commitments to succeed and make sure that you are fulfilling the obligations of your profession. The welfare of the students has to be a priority.
