Qualities and Skills Needed to Be a Head Teller in a Bank

How to Become a Head Teller in a Bank

Melvin Richardson
Most head tellers started out as tellers therefore it is imperative that they know the duties and functions of tellers. Head tellers will be required to supervise the tellers so they must know when a teller is not performing their duties up to par. Most of the times you can become a head teller right after you graduate from high school. If you have a little college in your background, that will help to put you ahead of other candidates.

Audit function

Head tellers may have to come over and audit a teller's cash drawer if there is a shortage. If a teller has been unable to find a shortage or overage the head teller will then make the necessary attempts to find the discrepancy. It is imperative that they know how to balance a cash drawer. As a head teller you should be able to give tellers a little bit of insight when it comes to finding an error. Sometimes it could be a very small error such as a transposed number. Head tellers may have to audit everything that a teller is responsible for such as cash; money orders and cashiers checks just to make sure there are no discrepancies

Supervisory skills

Head tellers will be required to supervisor a line of tellers therefore they should have a minimal amount of supervisory skills. They should know how to relate to and deal with tellers. Sometimes the tellers will need encouragement or motivation and the head teller will need to have the ability to become a coach or motivator. Head tellers will also be responsible for making sure that the tellers are meeting their referral goals.

Attitude

Head tellers need to have excellent attitudes because they will be dealing with tellers, customers, and management all day long. A great attitude goes a long way when you are interacting with others.

Branch operations

Head tellers will need to know how to perform branch operations such as handling the ATM machine, the cash vault, handling cash, and handling a cash drawer. Head tellers should know how to audit the checks and money orders within the branch

Referrals

Head tellers may also be responsible for having a referral goal which entails finding out a customer's needs and then sending them to a sales associate for further action.

Communication skills

Head tellers should be excellent communicators written and verbally. They will be required to communicate with customers, tellers, and management on a daily basis. In a bank your ability to communicate with associates can determine your success or failure. If a teller is not meeting their responsibilities and performing their duties to the best of their ability the head teller may have to intervene and ultimately report the short comings to the branch manager. Effective communicate skills are needed in order for everyone to understand what is going on. This increases the chance of effectively finding a solution to the problem.

Applying

Most banks have websites that allow you to apply right on line. This gives you the opportunity to see if there are any other opportunities available.
