Qualities and Skills Needed to Become a Life Coach

Melvin Richardson
If you want to become a life coach then you need the ability to motivate, and inspire individuals to go above and beyond the call of duty. You have to be able to hold people accountable for achieving their goals and objectives. If someone is not hitting their goals you have to be able to recognize why.

Fact finding

When you first start coaching you have to find out what goals the student wants to accomplish and why they want to accomplish them. Whatever their reason it has to be something that drives them to a state of wild passion. Nothing was ever accomplished without passion.

Set goals

As a coach you should have the ability to help those that you coach set goals and then map out a strategy that will enable the student to achieve those goals. As a coach you have to let them know that there will be road blocks and obstacles.

Accountability

You must make sure that your students remain accountable for their goals and objectives. The best way to do this is for them to write them down and follow up when they are supposed to

Celebrate

Coaches' help their students celebrate any successes that they may have had during the week or since the last coaching session took place. You have to insist that your students celebrate even when there is only a small success.

Techniques

As a coach you should be able to suggest a number of things that will enable your student to overcome obstacles and put them on the road to achieving their goals and objectives.

Focus

A coach needs to have the ability to help a student focus on their goals and weed out the distractions.

Plan

There should be a workable plan of action in place that will enable the student to achieve their goals and objectives.

Assignments

When you become a coach sometimes you will give your student various assignments they will need to accomplish in order for them to advance to the next level and become successful. Assignment should make the student grow and develop and help push them in the direction of their dreams.

Sounding board

Every so often a coach will become a sounding board that the student can utilize when things get difficult or seem like they are not moving along like they should be.

All successful individuals in every field of endeavor have had a coach or a mentor that showed them the ropes and helped to speed them along in their careers or professions.
