Qualities to Strive for as a Freelance Writer

If you're thinking of starting a career as a freelancer writer there are some qualities that you should strive for in order to be successful. Whether you have a degree in journalism or you just love to write, every writer needs to have certain personal guidelines in place if they want to truly have a prosperous career as a freelance writer.

The Ability to Write

First of all one of the major qualities you need to have or strive for as a freelance writer is the ability to write. If your skills are not up to par the best thing you can do is practice, take a writing class, read, and develop your skills. Reading helps you to write better because you will atomically see examples of good grammar in books. Practice is also one of the best things you can do because the more you write the better you will get. Although some of your articles may be more interesting and stronger than others you will still continue to develop this skill if you write a lot. One way to get a lot of practice is to write for Associated Content.

Organization

If you want to be successful as a freelance writer you also need to be very organized. Organization is essential because when you are organized you save time and energy so that your efforts can be focused on writing. You need to be able to meet deadlines and find everything you need. Organize a filing system on your computer and save all the articles you write on a disk so that you can use them as samples. I have various folders set up for different clients that I work for continually such as Lucid Magazine, Associated Content, and my insurance broker. You also need to have a calendar, filing system and daily to do lists, which I will talk more about in up coming articles.

Discipline

You will only be successful as a freelance writer if you take this seriously as a career. You need to always write your own material and be certain that you check your sources for reliability. Stay on task and make a list of what you need to accomplish for the day. Look at your calendar and prioritize your tasks based on when your assignments are due. You will only meet your goals is you avoid procrastination and get right down to business.

If you want to build an income with Associated Content you should write a certain number of articles each month. Although the up front payments may be low, remember that you can build passive income from your articles because you will be paid $1.50 for every 1000 page views that you get. I love passive income! I am striving to write an average of 5 articles per day during the week. Treat this like a real job.

Learn From Rejection

You need to have the ability to take rejection and learn from it. Even the best writers only sell about 50-60% of their work, sometimes less. Not everyone is going to like your writing style and that's okay. Don't take it personal. You can't take rejection to heart or you won't go any where with your freelance writing career. Try to learn from rejection instead. When you get feedback use it to improve on your writing and grow. Constructive criticism is actually a very good thing because when someone else offers their opinion this can help you to see things from another person's eyes. Everyone has a different perspective, and you can use this to your advantage by taking advice from these critics and other writers. Successful people always want to continually learn and grow, and they never know it all.

Flexibility

It is essential to be flexible when you're working as a freelance writer. Sometimes clients may want you to get a press release done in one day. This may require you to be flexible and set aside other assignments just for the time being so that you can get it done.

Imagination

Every freelance writer needs to have an imagination. You will want to be creative and come up with new and fresh ideas. Write about topics that are popular and of interest to you. Keep an idea book so that you can write down fresh ideas when they come into your mind. Magazines in particular are always looking for fresh ideas or new spins on old ideas.
