Even on TripAdvisor the Quality Inn University Center was rated 3.5 on a scale of 5. Even though the Quality Inn website says the site has a pool, there is no pool. There is also no continental breakfast like most hotels within the Choice hotel chains. There also was no fridge to store bottles of water or extra food in case you are spending a long period of time there. The wall sockets do not work well, in fact they didn't work and you needed to jiggle some of them to make them work. The only amenity the hotel had was free high speed Internet and a Panera Bread on-site which could make up for the lack of a continental breakfast, but still doesn't excuse it. There was only one working elevator which took a long time getting to the floors. There is only one ice machine and is located on one floor, so if you need ice you need to walk down to the third floor to get your ice.
When you go to a hotel, you expect the staff to be courteous, friendly and professional, but you will not get that at the Quality Inn University Center in Pittsburgh. They were rude, though there was one front desk clerk that was pleasant. The check out took too long, one front desk clerk appeared as if he hadn't showered in days and needed to pull his hair back instead of letting it fly everywhere and clean up his facial hair. He honestly looked like a bum instead of an employee of a supposedly reputible hotel chain. Some of the maintenence men and housekeeping staff acted unprofessionally and hit on many of our teenage youth group members. The hotel room was not worth the price what so ever. We payed about 200 dollars for a room with one queen sized bed, and that is all that basically fit in the room other than a desk, television and a small table. The room had a musty smell and the bed linens felt scratchy making it hard to have a good nights sleep. The bathroom was probably the only good thing about the room. The water was very warm, scolding hot even, but that could be worked with.
There was a small balcony that you could walk out on, but there wasn't a view of anything other than the road, which is fine. There were no chairs and if there was a chair you still would not have been able to look out because the wall was so tall. The sliding door leading to the balcony took two people to open because it was too hard to push by oneself. If you look the directions up on mapquest you will get lost because the site had roads that did not even exsist in the city of Pittsburgh. The key card was fairly easy to use and instantly unlocks the door instead of you having to keep trying over and over again. It gave us instant access to our room, which we were not happy with anyway. The floor felt hard as if the carpet was laid down on concrete without any padding in between.
There was a fifty dollar deposit if you were paying for the room, with cash; which I did not understand. If you are paying for cash why would you need to pay an extra fifty dollars which they held until check out. It was an added expense that was not expected and caused a slight issue among those in the group who didn't account for a deposit. When we were checking outit seemed like the front desk clerk had no idea how to do refund the deposit and needed to call for the manager to come help. There were a few vending machines, but many were empty. Finding then enterance to the hotel was a little difficult as the enter sign was for the Panera Bread. Being in a major city there was no sign of security other than a small little shack outside of the building. I will give the place one good thing, it was quiet and we couldn't hear the group across the hall from us.
Out of all the hotels that I have stayed in the past Quality Inn University Center was the worst. There were very few good things about this hotel and I would never stay there again, nor will I tell my friends and family about it. A hotel has a lot to live up and needs to take advantage of their location which this establishment did not. The next time I attend the same youth conference I will not be staying at the Quality Inn, I will be looking for another place to reserve a room for my youth group. The Quality Inn University Center, is not a good place to stay.
