Quandries

A Poem About Choices and Questions and Apparent Inconsistencies

Sheri Fresonke Harper
I wrote a song of love on a window
and wondered did I love he or only my reflection?

I loved the escape from gravity
and wondered would I have a home or was my home me?

Life leached out of me and I had no faith
except some time, some eternity a hand held me to love.

I had a temple echoing of loneliness
and filled it with choir and called it love and God.

I went to the altar of society crying
why do you say that you are me are we and we are God?

I heard the madness call in the night
renounce all faith, renounce your God take me instead as love.

I heard the atoms buzzing from my skin to yours
and wondered is this God or stagnation?

I saw light diffuse into bands of void and power
and wondered is this balance or is this misdirection?

I loved one who has no God no mass no light
who wondered if life could ever touch my heart and ignite his?

I say I have no God no faith only this life
but when dew collects on a spider's web, I know I lie.

God called on me and said you are arrogant, show hubris
and I said I obey all the laws of life, call me I am.

Wow. "I say I have no God no faith only this life / but when dew collects on a spider's web, I know I lie." That line rocks.

PS: There was so much going on within the poem that I failed to mention how fitting the picture was, too.

There is so much going on in these lines...I know that your faith is apparent here but I also can feel your natural need to question. Excellent work...really makes me think tonight as I write this. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Great. I experience this as a poem of faith, but one that acknowledges doubt, fear and uncertainty. As such, it exhibits a truth, and that's what poetry is all about; isn't it?
