Quebec's Secret Singing Sensation: Nathalie Beaulne

Erin Stone
In continuing my aim to bring hidden music out of the dark, I would like to introduce you guys to Nathalie Beaulne. Born on August 27, 1969 in Greenfield Park, just outside of Montreal, Nathalie is the daughter of famous Quebecois songstress, Ginette Moisan. Ginette's thirty year long career ranged from singing Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, and Willy Nelson to popular French songs. Her talent achieved two records and a contract for the Place des Art, which she refused because she felt she was too old to perform. It wouldn't be long before her daughter followed in her footsteps.

Ginette never wanted Nathalie to pursue a singing career growing up so she didn't start singing until recent years. Though she doubts her talents, Nathalie has had vocal training and has been part of two different bands. Her cousin asked her to sing for his band, which lasted for a year before he attempted to kick her out claiming she wasn't pretty enough for the band's image. Instead of denying her musical talent, Nathalie saw the silver lining on the clouds by starting a new band with the other members called The Anonymous, which was never under Nathalie's approval.

The new band's members were all of mixed age and tastes, but they found a harmony in playing soft rock, classic rock, and Quebecois music. Though they were only together for seven months, Nathalie can still remember their biggest success fondly. They performed a concert in front of two hundred and fifty family, friends, and supporters on December 23 in 2006. Unfortunately, different things started coming up in other band members' personal lives which led to the band drifting apart. However, Nathalie is still in contact with a few members.

Nathalie is very passionate about singing, despite claiming she's too old to make it a career as well as feeling her abilities aren't good enough. She counts her mother, Reno, and Cher as her influences, but is quick to add that there are really too many to say. She enjoys singing as a way to release pressure and to feel calmer, better, and just happier with life. She doesn't have a favourite song to sing or a favourite music style, but she enjoys any song that gets her deep down inside as long as it isn't rap, screaming music, or opera. Her favourite place to sing is in the shower or in front of an audience. However, she feels that if she's singing to impress people or to do something she's more likely to screw up.

Now, for the truth about Ms. Beaulne's talent. Regrettably, I wasn't at her band's big concert, but I did see the band perform earlier in the summer and they were something else. I am so proud of Nathalie's achievements. Her voice is powerful and provoking. Her voice blends well with classic rock and country songs. It's beautiful. Don't be fooled by her modesty. This powerhouse knows what she's doing.

I've provided a link to Nathalie's member page on the popular web site, SingSnap. I definitely recommend listening to her versions of Love Will Keep Us Alive by The Eagles and Lady in Red by Chris De Burgh. Once you hear her sing you can't get it out of your head. After listening, I'd love to get your opinions on Quebec's secret star so please leave me a comment!
