Queen Cat with Her Newborn Kittens

Our Newborn Kitten Experience

Ranee Wright
Watching a video even after being there is not the same as seeing the action and beauty of nature right before your eyes. This was the first time I ever witnessed any animal giving birth. Diamond, the queen cat, made labor look easy. I was in awe of nature as I watched her clean off each sac and eat the umbilical cords. She was very patient and knew just what to do every step of the way. I have bonded with Diamond since being with her for the birth of her newborn kittens.

Cat Birth
Queen cat Diamond's mucous plug was visible in the afternoon and by the next day her firstborn came - at around 7:30 a.m. There was an hour or two between kittens, giving Diamond time to nurse and clean each newborn kitten. Number 5 was born around 2 p.m. Thankfully there were no problems except the next day I woke up to find she had 2 more that did not make it. Queen cat - that is a lot of babies! I don't think Diamond could have cared for 7 newborn kittens or that they all would have flourished. Still it was sad to bury them.

  • Calico cats are almost always female
  • Yellow/orange cats are almost always male
  • Newborn kittens hair color will change as it gets older.
Diamond's kittens have defied the 'almost always'. Yellow kitten is female and calico is male!!!
The kittens look nothing like they did as newborns. Their colors are so different and of course their eyes are no longer blue.
