Queen for a Day?

Five Cats, Three Females and One Top Queen

Mike Bacon
Sounds like a new season of Survivor, doesn't it? For our kitties, maybe it is at that! With a household of five cats, let me tell you, life is never dull!

We had three cats for quite a while. Jenny, our Calico short hair tabby is the oldest, and for a long time was the leader of the pack. Shadow, a black Siamese mix, who thinks he's a dog (he will actually play fetch) came next, then Mac an orange short hair tabby mix was out baby for about a year and a half. He got the name Mac because when we first brought him home as a kitten, he scared the crap out of Jenny when she came up to the cat carrier to check him out. He let out a spit and a hiss that had her running for cover. A friend commented that it was like General MacArthur facing down the Japanese during WWII. SO we named him Mac.

A year and a half later, we were in a pet store, and saw Belle, a gray striped tabby mix who was up for adoption. We took one look at her, and we were sunk. There was no way she was not coming home with us. Six month later we ended up with Lexie, a Tortie mix, pretty much the same way.

Up until we got Lexie, Belle had decided that Jenny's years at the top were over. She started bossing around the others, and got them all in line. She would growl, hiss, and nip anyone that did not kowtow to her. Life for Belle was pretty good.

Enter Lexie. From the time she got here, she decided that Belle was a bitch, and she was not going to stand for that. (Actually the correct tem is Queen, but I digress)

Lexie decided that there would be one top queen in the house. Lexie. Every time Belle comes near, Lexie will chase her out of the room, and let her know in no uncertain terms, she is the boss around here.

For her part Belle gives us looks as if to ask" Don't you feel sorry for me?"

Usually, we just let them work it out on their own. Unless we see fur fly we figure that Belle needs to just grow a figurative pair. (I know, hard to picture...) Until then Lexie seems to have fought for and won the position of top queen in our house.

Belle continues to plot the revolution.

Like I said, life with five cats, is never dull.
