Queretaran Dusky Rattlesnake - Facts and Information

Crotalus Aquilus

Rodney Southern
The Queretaran dusky rattlesnake is one of the most little known rattlesnakes that live outside of its range. Those that live in the highlands of Central Mexico where it is located are fully aware of them. They are rather abundant in this area and can often be seen sunbathing on rocks or various other flat surfaces to warm themselves. The Queretaran dusky rattlesnake is not your average rattlesnake.

Queretaran Dusky Rattlesnake Identification

This rattlesnake is unusual in that they can be a number of different colors and shades. This is largely determined by their surroundings it is thought. They have been known to be anything from reddish in color to dark brown. They are small snakes as rattlesnakes go, growing to maybe two feet at the most. The body of the dusky rattlesnake is stout, however, and they have the trademark head of your average rattlesnake.

Danger from Queretaran Dusky Rattlesnakes

This snake is venomous and is capable of harming humans with a single bite. The venom affects the tissues of the body and can cause major medical problems. It is hemotoxic in makeup. The Queretaran dusky rattlesnake is not quick to bite as a rule. They are peaceful snakes that would much rather be left alone. They will bite if someone pushes the issue or gets overly close. They should be given a wide berth.

Queretaran Dusky Rattlesnake Habitats and Food

This is one rattlesnake that likes elevation. They are found in the mountains of central Mexico. They have been found in grasslands, wooded areas and even among the rocky hillsides of the area. Anywhere they can hide safely and hunt their favorite foods is fair game. They particularly love lizards, but will also eat frogs and various rodents.

The Queretaran Dusky rattlesnake is not well known throughout the world, but it is a notable species in Mexico. They are fairly abundant and a vibrant species. Though their food and habitat is plentiful at this time, growth inevitably is coming to their area as well. If we do not carefully conserve this species, it could quickly become extinct given its specific location and habitat.
