Can I do without it? Most impulse buying is associated with wants, not needs. The fact is that wants change. What you desire today may not be as attractive two or three days from now. If you don't need it, put it back.
Does it do more than I need it to do? We often get suckered into buying gadgets that perform a purpose we need, but also come with a bunch of other bells and whistles we never get around to using. As it happens, these feature rich products usually cost a lot more than a basic device that would do what we need it to do. Put back the souped up version and go for the basic one that will meet your needs.
Is it worth the cost? That depends. Again, it goes back to needs versus wants. If you need the item and the price is the best you can find, then it is worth it. However, if you think it can be bought cheaper elsewhere, keep looking.
Is there room to store it? Sure, you can always use that flat of twenty-four cans of green beans, but is there room for it in the pantry or another location in the house? If there is no where to store the items without turning your home into an obstacle course, the deal isn't so hot after all. Keep the pantry full and let that be enough.
Not all impulse buying is a bad thing. From time to time, you will come across deals on things you truly need and will use regularly. But before you grab that sale item and head to the check out counter, take a moment and ask yourself these questions. Doing so will save you a lot of money in the long run.
