Questions to Ask When Buying a Home Security System

B J Abel
When deciding on a vendor and system for your home security there are many factors to consider. Here are several "must ask" questions when getting ready to purchase a home security system.

1) Are You An Authorized Dealer? This can seem like a simple question but there are many large security resellers that are not. Getting an authorized dealer can protect you from major issues in the long run. The price will look great but most of these dealers cannot guarantee the parts and service and can end up costing MUCH more in the long run.

2) Does Your Service Require A Contract? Being flexible with a monthly service fee should be a big deal when deciding on a company. Either adding additional security features or removing some on a monthly basis can easily happen when you needs or desires change. Being able to do this will also ease your mind to cancel service anytime if a financial crisis comes up or you quickly sell the house and move out.

3) Installation Flat Fee? Finding out the installation fee can help with many decisions on the purchase. First of all if you want to install it yourself or have them do it. Many big companies now are offering free installation if you sign a long-term contract. Others will have a flat installation fee for the different packages. Having a professional do the installation can be a double win, as you won't have to deal with the installation for one. But mainly you will have a certified installation that should be under warranty if something goes wrong.

4) Can I Pick My Components? Most of the major companies will only have preset packages and is the main reason people go to an off brand to put together a security package that they want. Be firm with this and most of the companies will try to work with you to create a package you want. If you don't see it on there brochure don't assume they can't do it. A lot of times they will just find a package that encompasses all of the components you want and discount the price to a price point that fits your home security options.

5) How Long Is The Warranty And What Does It Cover? A warranty is great and should come standard if you're using an authorized vendor, but the specifics should never be assumed. You should get the warranty length in writing as well as what it covers while ensuring that the store you're using is an authorized repair shop, so they can service warranty calls. Buying a home security system can seem daunting, but if you are patient and ask the right questions it can be a smooth and easy experience.
