Questions to Ask Funeral Director

Richard Banks
No one wants to face a funeral director, but they are a valuable and necessary part of life. During a time of sadness, preparing questions ahead of time ensures nothing is missed.

Losing a loved one does not feel good. Unfortunately, grieving must be placed on hold for a bit when the time comes to speak with the funeral director. *Warning, some of these questions may be a bit sensitive for the reader, especially if they have recently lost a loved one.*

Do you have a license?
Just because a business is listed online or in the phone book does not mean they have a license to work in the funeral business. Remember, the funeral director runs a funeral home where the body will be prepared or cremated, so his or her licensing is important. Another question to ask is, has the funeral director has been recommended for their service and professionalism? Funeral directories should keep testimonials from previous customers. It is best to contact previous customers only if they have been given enough time to grieve

How much do funeral, cremation, and burial services cost?
Insurance companies typically will include funeral costs in their plans. So understanding the cost associated with the services will allow you to prepare for any out of pocket expenses.

Do you offer viewing or service rooms?
The grieving process is different for different people. A viewing room will allow friends and family to give their condolences without being in an open room.

How long before the death certificate will be received?
Death certificates will be needed for various reasons to include insurance, death benefits, and closure on estate processes. Companies will not proceed in final measures without a death certificate.

Do I need a casket for cremation?
You want to be able to abide by your loved ones wish of cremation. The first question to be asked is if the funeral parlor offers cremation. Secondly ask if you will need to purchase a casket. Select funeral homes require caskets to perform cremation services. You will find various outlets, either online or in the funeral home where you will be able to purchase caskets.

Asking questions during a time of sorrow is difficult. Having lost a loved one is a trying time in everyone's life. You will want all of the answers in place to ensure you loved ones final resting place is what they would have wanted.
