Questions to Ask Yourself Before Purchasing a Dog

You have decided you want to purchase a dog. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before making your purchase.

Why do I want a dog?

Decide your motive(s) for wanting a dog. Do you want a dog because you are lonely, you feel you could give some animal a good home or do you just think they are cute? Make sure you have thought this question over thoroughly. A dog is not a toy and a pet carries a lot of responsibility. You want to make sure your reason is genuine and it is something you really want. Having a pet is like adding a new addition to your family. Remember you will be altering your lifestyle so make sure you have enough time to take care of your dog.

Does my current residency allow pets?

If you live in an apartment or have a homeowners' association you want to make sure you are allowed to have pets. Some apartments do not allow pets or have certain restrictions. Make sure you find out what your lease states or your HOA before purchasing any pets.

Can I afford a pet?

Pet ownership can be very expensive and time consuming. You will need to make sure your pet has all of their vaccinations and they see the veterinarian whenever they need to or during an emergency. Your pet will require every day expenses such as food. This can become very costly. You will need to decide if you will purchase toys or treats for your dog. You will also need to supply bathing products, collars, leashes, products to protect them from bugs etc. If your dog is not trained you will have to take into consideration if you will have the patience to train your dog or if you will hire someone else to do so. What will happen if your dog becomes ill? How will you be able to accommodate your pet? If you are not going to take your dog with you, you will need to make special arrangements when you go on vacation.

Do I have the proper space for a dog?

If you live in a house you will need to decide if you will keep your pet inside or outside. If you live in an apartment you will need to decide where you will keep your dog. Will your pet have free course of your apartment or will they have a certain area? You will also need to decide what you will do with your pet if you work. Will you keep your pet in a kennel? Will you have a doggie bed for your pet? These are all questions you will have to answer.

As you can see there are several questions you will have to consider before making your purchase, but remember pets can be fun to have especially if you have the time and energy to commit to them. Your dog will need a lot of tender, love and care so make sure you are able to provide that and more. The joy they bring is immeasurable and so is the love.
